My Dwarfs just died....
« on: April 22, 2010, 11:32:07 pm »

I don't know how...or why, but my dwarfs just..randomly died.  6 of the bled to death, and further examination showed that they died from missing their upper body, which certainly sounds fatal to me.  However, I don't know what caused it, there wasn't anything on the announcements page, nor any creatures around.

My last dwarf went insane and suicided.  Wonder why...

Was it raining? Did they otherwise get wet?

It seems that there is currently a bug with how the game handles temperatures of water coverings on things. If the environment is warm, including the levels of warmth that can come simply from being outdoors in tropical and subtropical regions, water coverings will get so hot as to boil dwarves to death. It's known as the acid rain bug, since rain is the most common cause of random water coverings on dwarves' upper bodies, which, as you've seen, is the most common cause of death due to this bug.

Somehow I think the effects would be quite a bit more drastic if they were being assaulted by the Thread.  Although given the vast interconnected cave networks found in DF, maybe you're on to something there...

Yeah. I hope after it gets purged it'll be reintroduced someday as a feature... Acid rain would be so awesome on evil, barren biomes!

You can turn weather off in your init file for now, it will even speed the game up a bit. You won't be missing much, it won't rain anymore in fortress mode and you won't get mist and such in adventure mode. I usually leave it off anyway just for the FPS boost.

A side note, the missing upper body is a separate bug. All dead creatures are listed as missing their upper body, no matter what the real situation was when they died.
