Forgotton beast kicked in half.
« on: April 22, 2010, 06:09:29 pm »

The forgotten beast Oggez Koganmishos Tig Zimesh has come! An enormous humanoid composed of ash. It has large mandibles and appears to be emaciated.

This one can swim just fine, and I've yet to block off the water from things crawling up... so I equip my axe dwarf, ready with his militia of war animals (grizzly bears, tigers, jaguars.... thank you elves!). I lose track of the beast, and my dwarves start getting interrupted by it... the thing was faster than I thought! So I zoom over to the alert and... I see a red H. It's dead. I check the reports... it's my horse foal!

The foal attacks TFB, but it jumps away!
The foal kicks TFB in the right mandible with her right front hoof and the severed part sails off in an arc!
The foal kicks TFB in the lower body with her left front hoof and the severed part sails off in an arc!

Dead. I guess that's what it gets for being made of ASH, huh?

The forgotten beasts are a bit off, it seems... they're either entirely way too powerful (Bronzemurder), or they're so weak that a young horse can kick it in half before it even gets a chance to do anything. Now if only we could train war ponies....

Emaciate:
1 - to  make  abnormally  lean  or  thin  by  a  gradual  wasting  away  of  flesh.

I guess it doesn't have to mean starving -shrug-

Forgotten beasts are very hit or miss.

Some of them are complete and utter wimps. A kitten can instagib them.

Other forgotten beasts will make you wish you were being attacked by an army of bronze colossi.  :-\

For the record horse kicks seem RIDICULOUSLY powerful in certain situations. I had a merchant horse go berserk and EVERY dwarf or animal that passed by it got kicked into the wall and gibbed within a second.  That horse killed my fortress.

Horse kick destroys everything; bug or feature? :D

MyLittlePonyBuiltMyHotRod, this is your first warning. I would like to direct you to read our forum's FAQ and posting guidelines before posting again. Specifically we don't use swear words here, and your picture of Stalin riding a Year3 Limited Edition Starflower inside a German concentration camp was both upsetting and historically inaccurate.

Ramps in DF are these sort of hyperdimensional monstrosities capable of allowing you to walk upwards in whatever direction seems plausible at the time

I feel that what people are calling "too powerful" is actually closer to how the things should be (not including the invulnerable ones.) Bronzmerder shows a beast of the depths, it killed untrained fighters and peasants with ease. when it faced a caravan guard it did some damage but was ultimately defeated by their skill and equipment. Sounds sort of like what a Megabeast should be.

Exactly.

And your armies of naked, unarmed wrestlers you're flinging at goblins wearing iron plate armor and using iron weapons? They'll be slaughtered. As they should be.

No more naked dwarven jedi kung-fu masters.

I was talking about the contrast between 'too powerful to viably defeat' (which, by the way, is why Toady had to add in the ability for these guys to actually die), and 'so weak that a baby horse kicks it in half'. There should be some level of consistancy. Not only that, but my fortress is only a year old, and it's already encountered four forgotten beasts. One of them deflected my trained axedwarf's attack, and proceeded to destroy half of his organs in one attack. So, no, they shouldn't be on the level of a bronze colossus, but nor should they be killed by an untrained naked baby animal.

one thing Ive seen with the new flesh layer system is that wounds are a lot more realistic (not all the way yet but more then they used to be.) the lucky hit that takes out the heart will drop someone no mater their size, while a large tough individual has a much better chance of avoiding such an injury a David and Goliath situation is possible. I havent encountered a forgoten beast that was easily dropped so I have no knowledge along those lines, but I have killed a forgoten beast with a few axedwarves taking no damage do to striking first and hitting its neck, it may have been one of those super weak FBs but even if it wasn't, nothing can survive the head removal.

my post was a response to the community who complain about megabeasts being to powerful now. I agree with you that wholeheartedly that a horse shouldn't be able to kick one in half, But disagree with the idea that they are to powerful*.

*not including the Error where they wont ever die because attacks never hit the same spot twice.

I prefer the "hit or miss" approach myself more.
It keeps things a bit fresh when you know that the horrible thing that just crept from the dark to your fortress might not be an unstoppable killing machine.

So far, I've had two beast attacks in this fort. First was an eyeless falcon. It attacked a bunch of cave swallowmen, who stabbed it to death with wooden spears.

Then there was a 3-eyed lizard or some sauri. This time, I actually had things ready. A legendary armorer from a mood, a squad of 10 armed soldiers, and a lot of places to stand and fight on.

The first dwarf to attack it was torn apart. First kick went through the spine and paralyzed him, the second hit finished the guy off, since he bled to death soon after the other soldiers all attacked and chopped the thing to pieces.

The unknown is nice. I always fear the same way whenever a beast arrives. Because maybe THIS one is going the be the one that kills the whole fort.

Well, I can agree with you there. I have no problem with MEGAbeasts being... well... mega... I have a problem with them being randomly VERY mega, randomly very not mega, and coming far too frequently. If they're going to be very tough, they shouldn't come once a season.
