Traps and stupid vermin

How do you all manage to trap the cool wild animals that can be trained as war types?  Whenever I set animal traps, vermin constantly get caught or they steal the bait!  Are you all just purchasing them from the elves?

You build cage traps to catch large animals. "Animal trap" is for vermin only.
But yeah elves are the easiest source of interesting animals.

Animal traps catch vermin, which you can then tame. Some dwarves like having vermin for pets. Large animals/goblins are caught in cage traps.

Hmm, for predator type animals, could you chain a kitten in the middle of, say, a 5 deep field of cage traps, and have animals get caught when they come to feast?  Or will that only work for kitten-hating goblins?

I bullied a giant jaguar, now that i thnk of it i probbably should have caught it, first thing i thought when i saw it was... Dinner! then i had to explain to my school buddys that i was too afraid of it eating my dwarfs to try and chase it into a trap, But something such as this i would think would be worth trapping and throwing in a cage and eating its babies

what's the population req for a dungeon master?

So having a baron/duke/count should be sufficient. However it does not work in my fort, i have a baron, but still no DM/TC/hammerer positions

I think most animals won't actively path towards things they want to kill. Tags like[LIKES_FIGHTING] and [LARGE_PREDATOR] helped in the previous version, but I haven't done any modding in the new version yet.

I have 8 giant eagles and no DM ....

Thinking about building a muklty Z level, wild bird cage and droping annoying horses/mules/cows into it every now and then.

I have caged 17 fluffy wamblers, but they have the small remains tag and I can't butcher them... moddin' time.
