Vanguard online
« on: April 22, 2010, 11:41:30 am »

So I found this on amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vanguard-Saga-Heroes-PC-DVD/dp/B000MMW7O8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1271952741&sr=8-3

Vanguard online for 2 quid. Think I'm gonna get it, since vanguard seems to have alot of decent ideas. Anyone else interested? Theres a free 14 day trial too for anyone interested. Though I think that's limited to a special trial island of some kind. Not sure if its worth giving the trial a go first, bearing in mind that you cant use the 30 days you get when you buy the game with your trial account (though you can just make a new station account and use the 30 days on that ith different characters).

http://vanguard.station.sony.com/isleofdawn/ Is the trial.

For those that dont know about vanguard heres a quick run down:

There are 19 races. Aside from the 6 human races there are also fantasy staples like dwarves (yay!) half giants, elves, wolf men, etc. There are also 15 classes ranging from the traditional warrior and druid, to more unique blood mage, drunken monk, psionicist and disciple.

Vanguard is also unique for having a sphere system, where each character has access to 4 spheres of advancement: adventurer, crafting, diplomacy and harvesting (which is a minor sphere). You can advance your character in each sphere independantly, get different sets of skills, abilities, equipment etc for each sphere and so on. Apparently you can play your character as a pure crafter and never go adventuring though I dont know exactly how viable that is. Apparently each continent has its own crafting style, so a basic sord from one continent will look different than a basic sword from the other two. You can also craft player and guild housing. And ships/boats.

Diplomacy is the last major sphere, and plays like a card game, where you cajole, badger, or intimidate people into doing what you want. I'm not sure to what end you would do this, but looks interesting anyway.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanguard_Saga_of_Heroes Heres the wiki if you wanna take a look.

So anyone else interested in this? Anyone played before and want to weigh in on what its like?

Vanguard was the best triple-a MMO I have played (which is not saying a lot, but still...).  I highly recommend going through the Isle of Dawn trial, as it is really well done and gives you a taste of every feature in the game.

After level 10 the game gets pretty grindy, but I think that the sheer scale of the world and the level of freedom makes up for it quite a bit.  Some of the landscape is pretty breathtaking, especially when viewed from high up.

Everything is spaced out pretty far apart, but you get a mount at level 10 and there are flying mounts which can be rented from the start.  I made it to around level 18 before my free trial ran out, but if I ever choose to pay for a MMO again, this would definitely be the one I'd choose.

I've played the trial, and it's pretty fun. Redownloading it, now.

I shall leave the trial downloading when im out then, and order the game from amazon when I get back in.

I hope i can be a drunken dwarf monk, though I've a feeling I may be foiled by race/class restrictions. :P

Oh man, when I first saw the title I thought SWEET, Vanguard Online, one of my fav old school side scrollers, YEAH!  I then of course came to the thread and was slightly disappointed.

For those who want to play the original Vanguard, alas, quickly looking the only play online I could find was from gametap. :(
http://www.gametap.com/video-games/Vanguard-20001017-38.html

But here's some other old Atari games you can play.

(Edit - Just wanted to add it's been 20 years since I played Adventure, I still remember the path and everything I needed to do, won in less than a min.  WOOT!)

Also, Vanguard Online the MMO, is supposed to be pretty good, here's the mmorpg page on it.
http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/147

Sorry for slight hijack, my bad. :)
Take care,

I am playing it a bit, but I also just got Monster Hunter, so I don't know how often I am there. Building a pure crafter(artificats). My name is Dwarfs Fortress. Yup.

I think if you go on the PVP server it's mostly unrestricted. :D

Yeah, I got bored before I finished character creation.  I just can't do MMOs anymore.

I'm bumping this topic, because the other topic was about the Seradon server... which doesn't exist anymore. In fact, the last two servers are being merged so from now on there'll only be one server. Which is kinda awesome!

Anyways. I'm Ruiker. Anyone else playing this game?

Vanguard was/is high quality.

But it didn't get enough players, not nearly, and an MMORPG without players doesn't work.

played it when it first came out, i don't believe it's any better now.

Well since the game went f2p they've started patching the game again and it seems like there's new people all the time popping up in chat. I'd say give it a try... I'm playing through some of the diplomacy quests and they're AMAZING. I don't know what it is about the diplomacy system in Vanguard but I'm totally hooked now.
