[Succession] Setup (DF 2010)

So, I've never started a succession game, so I've decided to! However, I'm a pretty ordinary DF player (I like me calm forest with mountains and iron that I can mine happily and (semi) peacefully.) and I don't really have experience in starting in the more advanced (Read: SCARY!) zones. I'd like to, but thus far every time I do I get eaten by a wide variety of things. My remedy: A succession game, where other people can also get eaten by things!

So, I was wondering... What kind of place should I embark on? With what tools/items/drinks/vicious animals should I bring along?
