Author Topic: DF2010 - Init.txt settings ignored; can't find my save games.  (Read 1949 times)

The game is running perfectly fine, but repeatedly editing/replacing init.txt still hasn't given me my seasonal changes or X/7 fluid depths.

I know my saves are somewhere, but they're not in data/saves because there is no data/saves.

In conclusion, I've skimmed the forums and Googled, and have discovered nothing except the fact that I hate Vista.  Even more than I did before.

Have I botched the install?  If so, is it fixable?

Is your DF folder somewhere in Program Files? That would cause Vista to prevent from saving directly in the DF folder.

Move the whole DF folder to anywhere other then Program Files. Like. Say. Your desktop, or just right on your disk (C:\[Dwarf fortress folder name]).

Done and done.  Hating Vista further still--still no saves to be found, and I generated a world with a pretty interesting deity.  Sigh.  At least I didn't lose much progress...  still struggling to establish farms in this version.

Thanks a bunch for the help.

Hmm, That likely should not be happening, As my Vista works fine with this game, do you have a save folder? No? Make one. Have you tried setting NO to save compression? That also could be the problem.

Nope, no compression.  Found the saves, though.

About fifty directories under C:\users.

Can you paste the exact path please? I'm curious as to why it is doing that, and the path might give me a few ideas.

C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\ and then the regular directory tree of \DF\data\save\region.

DF itself in the normal directory was able to find the saves and load them, but not apply the various settings (seasonal saves, autosaves, non-random ground).

That's interesting, You might want to view this page.

Try moving the entire folder over your new DF folder (do not overwrite anything), and look for any .ini that points to the old DF folder, and move it somewhere else (so if we screw up we can reverse it).

"VirtualStore" is a virtual Program Files folder, Vista seems to not like any modified data going to Program Files, that's the reason of VirtualStore, VirtualStore acts as a second program files. So data going to the normal program files instead goes the VirtualStore folder's program file folder.

Moved the saves over already; didn't think to check for paths in .inis.

(I got bored about halfway through looking for the save files and started working on new world-gen parameters, and it's taking a while.  I like to crank up caves and megabeasts more than is probably healthy...  >_>)

I did notice that the old parameters didn't copy over with the save folders.  Think that's something in an .ini, or whatever hangup was keeping init.txt from working?

To tell you the truth, I don't really know. Do new init edits work? If so we're likely done here, If you don't mind editing them again. Otherwise you might have to try looking for offending ini's. Or something. Man, it's a lot tougher to help someone when you have nothing to go on except gut feelings.

I just copied the saves; I rather suspect the parameters are in another file?

Either way; thanks.  I'm merrily overseeing an underwater irrigation experiment likely to result in drownings.  :]

Hm, try searching file contents in the VirtualStore for 'init.txt', and move/delete those files. If that doesn't work, then I'm all out of ideas.

Also, You became a bay watcher because of this thread. :P
