I don't know about the author of that comic, but people still use the "if God is real/benevolent why does he let tsunamis happen" argument quite a bit in informal debate.  Just sayin'.

The reason people "still" raise the problem of evil in informal (and formal) debate is because it has not been refuted in a truly definitive way despite being very old. See e.g.

On topic: SMBC is very hit or miss; a lot is banal or at best mildly amusing, and a lot of the rest requires a certain quirky humor (and/or specific frames of reference) to appreciate. When it hits the bullseye, though, it's nigh peerless.
