I get the impression that it's a bunch of kids trying too hard to act retarded. Kind of like a bar where a bunch of kids drink 3 cans of beer and act drunk/rowdy/stoned. Not my kind of place, especially with the bandwidth eating. I'd sit back and laugh at it, and the memes that come out of it, though.

Rule 3 of the actual site tells you a bit about what to expect from /b/.

Quote
# Do not post the following outside of /b/: Trolls, flames, racism, off-topic replies, uncalled for catchphrases, macro image replies, indecipherable text (example: "lol u tk him 2da bar|?"), anthropomorphic ("furry"), grotesque ("guro"), or loli/shota pornography.

So /b/ is 4chan's prison? Where they keep all the things that shouldn't see the light of day or night?

No, prisons imply that they can't get out. This is more like a demon lair, where they launch the occasional invasion.

I think it's more like that piss-ocean mentioned earlier; all the riffraff gets widdled away into it and it occasionally floods the odd coast on some occult tide schedule.

A person going to the chans should not expect any less than the worst the internet has to offer. So when they get there, the threads that actually have neat content are similar to diamonds in the rough.

I think witnessing the gross/horrible stuff is not a bad thing. It's easier to deal with the crap if you know you've seen worse. I've gotten to the point where little really bothers me anymore. I find it is best to lurk in the chans rather than try to be a part of it.

Go to the chans for content, not for conversation. Once you get used to the flow of things and where to look for what, the chans are a stunning source of random stuff, most notably of the adult variety.

I just meant that one should go in expecting little to nothing so that they can be pleasantly surprised. Rather than going in expected great stuff and then running into something like 2 girls 1 cup (DO NOT GOOGLE THAT)
