This is a statue of a legendary craftsdwarf. It is made of marble. On the item is an image of a legendary craftsdwarf in marble. The legendary craftsdwarf is sculpting a statue of a legendary craftsdwarf. On the item is an image of a legendary craftsdwarf in marble (ad infinitum).

That having been said, I fully support the idea of statues that relate legends. I don't believe it would be difficult to have one statue represent an entire scene, it's a fairly common sight in sculpture these days; there are statues of multiple men hoisting a flag, single statues of a few people in pitched battle, et cetera.

Maybe to add an additional task for engravers, perhaps they could engrave small scenes on the statues' bases? Or better yet, engrave a few sentances attributing a (randomly generated, of course!) title to the work, stating the name of the craftsdwarf that created the piece, and explaining the events depicted? ("by In the year 1050, Noble XYZ drowned in a 'tragic' floodgate 'malfunction'.")

Since coffins don't seem to bring your dwarves down (actually they're often cheered up by well-made coffins), my Hall of Heroes is a hall that literally contains the heroes. In boxes. Why have statues when you can have the real thing!

This is a statue of a Great Dwarven Ruler. He is being administered a hammering as punishment for violating a mandate banning the trade of hammers.
