statues with descriptions
« on: December 01, 2006, 11:05:00 am »

Even though I've been finding myself engraving walls and floors a lot more than I used to now that the designs have the cool little descriptions, I still use a lot more statues than engravings.

And so as I was decorating my new dining hall this morning, it occured to me that it was a shame that I couldn't tell what the statues were of. (And I know I can't be the first one to have thought of this...)

Granted, you wouldn't get a 'scene' this way, but it would be cool if they made statues of heros from the past or nobles and legendary dwarves in your own fortress. (with maybe the occasional demon or named monster thrown in, laughing or striking a menacing pose)

Is anything like this planned for some point in the future?

That could be very cool.    :)

"The hall of heroes"

"The hall of horrors"

"The hall of... umm, lets not discuss what they are doing"

You could have a menu from the staue option that's similar to the items search. You type in what you want, or pick an option that makes a generic statue, and your mason would make a statue of it. It would start off with all of the objects and creature types in the game, and things such as specific dwarves (alive or dead), events, or animals would become available.

EDIT- I think this would be better than just randomness for statues, because they're a bit more profound than an engraving.

Multi-tiled statues anyone?  Depicting a scene instead of an action.

Bah! Statues of a speardwarf, a marksdwarf, three war dogs, and a demon.

Instant scene.

And definately random sculpture rather than specified. At least untill Toady implements master artisan nobles who can get the dwarves to do that.

Noble bloat!

Yes, we're definitely planning to specify the statues (and the little idols/figurines you make).

LOL. I've actually seen several people claim the statues in their screenshots are of them...it might be kind of sad if they can't pretend that anymore. Maybe there should be a few of the statues that depict 'a great dwarven ruler striking a heroic pose' or something, so they can keep living the dream.  ;)

This is an exceptional statue of a Great Dwarven Ruler. It is made of Onyx. The Great Dwarven Ruler is holding an iron scepter in their left hand and a bowl of stew in their right hand.
They are pointing the iron scepter deeper into the mountain.
The stew is made of finely minced kitten meat, well minced puppy meat and well minced quarry bush leaves.

This is a statue of a great Dwarven ruler. It is made of Moonstone. The Dwarven ruler is grasping a lever.
On the statues are images of dwarves in obsidian. The dwarves are drowning.

Hahaha  :D

Now for my try, inspired by yours:

This is a statue of a Great Dwarven Ruler. It is made of Jet. The Great Dwarven Ruler is grasping a lever. On the statues are images of nobles in Rose Quartz. The nobles are drowning. On the statues are images of dwarves in Clear Glass. The dwarves are celebrating.

This is a statue of a great Dwarven ruler. It is made of Obsidian. The Dwarven ruler is demanding expensive crap for his bedroom. He is forbidding you to export anything. He is laughing.

Oh my, Silleh Boy has started a trend.  :D

We could probably amuse ourselves for days with descriptions, but that would just clog up this thread. Of course, I suppose that's not so bad, since everythign worth saying has been said already...

This is a statue of a legendary craftsdwarf. It is made of dwarf bone. The legendary craftsdwarf is in a fell mood. There are images of dwarves on it in dwarf leather. The dwarves are looking at the legendary craftsdwarf in fear.
