It all began with zombie tigerman job cancel warning in my trog lobby (where the fort opens into the underground).  Then I noticed a smooth Slade (!) wall on level 69 close to my magma pool.  The smooth wall was was part of a ruin-like area deep underground with lots of zombies and at least two other surprises.

One of the surprises leads me to believe that the ruins guards something deeper and darker.

I have put about 10 forts up in 2010 so far and this is the first underground ruin I have seen.  (standard worldgen, no fancy settings).

Yea, I broke through this in my current fort.

I easily dispatched all the undead, and left it like that for a while. Then I got curious and sent down my squad of 20 highly skilled military dwarves clad in masterwork steel armor (with a few artifact steel axes and shields thrown in for good measure) and had my miner remove the sword. After removing the sword from the stone, I had 127 (I counted them) friendly dwarf-loving visitors. My FPS slowed to a crawl (it's usually 200+, it dropped to 10) and my military did not survive. We put up a good fight, though - killed a bunch of the weaker demons, then a bunch of fire based demons burnt the hell out of my dwarves and wouldn't die even after losing all their limbs.

Oh, and the wiki info about the temple not being connected to Hell and having to be dug out is wrong - it's connected at the bottom. Plus you can't dig out slade, so I have no idea where that came from. Misinformation.

The other time I breached Hell I just dug into adamantine and only 40 demons showed up, so I guess the temples are extra fun
