Nice cavern, what should I do with it?
« on: April 21, 2010, 12:07:02 pm »

So I've been playing around with the worldgen settings for caverns and got a really fine one:
http://www.mkv25.net/dfma/map-8549-oilylured

I'm not quite sure what I should do with it, but I already started building floors over the water, to reach the central pillar, where I will carve out the heart of my fortress.
Then I thought of connecting all the pillars with more catwalks across the different z-levels.
I probably should limit my dwarves as space will confined.
Well that's all what I was able to think of.

Any other Ideas?
It would be great if I somehow could use the water there...

Leave the underground lake!

Build buildings on the "islands", and then bridges connecting one island to another.

What worldgen parameters did you use?

I currently use 100 openness, 0 passages, and 50-100 water. Looks like you have a lot more water on your map than on mine. Are you using a higher water setting?

100 Openness, 0 Passages and water left on default (0-100, I believe).

Another great thing about this map is, that I can easily defend it.
I think nothing of walling myself in, so I have at least one military dwarf upon embark, which has to take care of alle the nasties there.
Since they can only come from one direction, defense shouldn't be too hard.

With a 0-100 water range you can get any value in between. It looks like your caverns have a very high water number, probably 75-80ish.

Maybe that helps with more single level open caverns.

A small number of overall z-levels may also help.
I'm not even sure if I have another cavern.
Whole map has 36 z-levels and magma starts 30 or above.

Hmm, that could be it. I put about 20 layers between each cavern layer on the worldgen, so most of my maps are 200ish Z levels from top to bottom.

Most of my caverns are about 5-6 Z levels, and they take place on several levels with very uneven floors.

How did you make it have so few overall z levels?

Oh Gordon Freeman, what medical procedure can't you educate alien war machines about?

There are options in the worldgen to control how deep the world is. Deeper world means the stuff is more spread out.

I was just lucky with my defaul z-level setting.
Buy yeah you can adjust that yourself.
If you make it all right, you get a nice flat cavern which doesn't spread over multiple z-levels.
