Do all ya'll know how long it takes to make beer?

Weeks is the answer for those of you who are unsure..I'm sure a lot of you make your own beer, as you think loosing is fun and boy are there a lot of ways to loose with brewing! (it is really fun..btw)

So, that means our little Dwarfy friends are making..um..really bad beer.  I always imagined that those little short guys would make really good beer as they have beards to soak in it.

Lets see now..to make a long story short;

soak grain in hot water (to get the sugar out)
boil that wort (wurt) with bittering plants (hops is what we use today or at least since 13th century..before that 'gruit' which is a mix of random herbs..which i image our heroes making beer out of)
cool it down
pitch in some yeast (well, unless you are making a belgian then you are just asking for something real nasty..you just let it sit open and hope the wild yeast that falls in will taste good <shudder>)
ferment for at least 2 weeks (3 is better) in a dark cool place.
Then you have a few choices for carbonation;
 put it in a keg/barrel and force CO2 in...um..can't find that on the embark screen..guess not)
 put it in keg/bottles/barrel with more sugar or unformeted wort and wait for at least 3 more weeks for the yeast to eat the new sugar and produce CO2.

sorry..i know..this is a game, but I have been imaging the little Dwarfs doing all these tasks for a year or so (still a total newb) and then seeing them produce beer so quick..made my stomach turn.



Anyways..making some IPA this weekend. Hail to the hops!

Given that the dwarves are literally surrounded by fungi, even the trees underground are fungal, I'm sure they have found some fast acting yeasts or whatever.

For dwarves, easy enough.

Still though, we are talking about making wine from fungi here and we've got stuff like cave wheat and quarry bush, so realism is kind of pushed to the side.

Dwarf beer is really not drinkable by humans, at least not more than once.
Humans never, ever remember this because of the powerful fumes. There are many legends regarding dwarven beer. The ones about exotic fungal spores are probably true, the ones about vermin remains most likely, most of the ones regarding cats are logical, as are the ones about demons. The ones about elven heads and children are almost certainly not true.

The simple explanation is that Toady hasn't yet refined the alcohol industry. Note that currently, water is not required for turning cave wheat or longland grass into beer.

There have been a few threads on the suggestion forum with lots of great ideas for the alcohol industry.

Also the timescale of DF is brainhurting at best. So real world times to make don't entirely apply.

The rate time passes in fortress mode makes a few weeks a trivial thing. And if I remember correctly, bear did not have carbonation for thousands of years until someone did it one or two centuries ago.

Dwarves being... well, drawves aside, it would be cool to have a semi-realistic booze industry. The entire brewery being a 3x3 workshop just seems disproportionate. It would add some extra chalenge to the game as well.

Perhaps when the game does a bit more with chemisty (allowing materials to transform over time, that sorta stuff) it will at least make it moddable, though I would be suprised if Toady would neglect to put this in the unmodded game.

If you realy nitpick every single typographical or gramatical error on the internet then you must be a very busy man.

Seriously, my mind just skipped over those typos. Though carbonised bears make better food for though then I'd think.

I... I really want to see a carbonated bear now. I know it makes no sense, but it somehow still sounds awesome.

But on topic: yeah, the booze industry could use some work. Maybe a few different buildings, or a few general purpose ones (a distillery might be useful for distilling things other than booze, you'd just task it for booze specifically if you wanted that), some sort of aging process (maybe booze anti-rots if it's of high quality). But that seems like mostly bells-and-whistles to get added along with an improved food industry and better consumable good handling in general.

Its delishus carbonated bear, you must have some~

I love this community..so funny.

Btw was not complaining at all, maybe it seemed like it but was just noting that I thought that our little Dwarf friends were drinking green beer (bears?) and it was funny.

I think it might be fun to add something into the Dwarven Still like a "lavish" ale that would take longer and make them think happier thoughts (or dreams of large women) like a lavish meal.

New and more "exotic" (by current Dwarven in-game standards) methods of brewing drinks would be highly entertaining, and I can certainly see it coming about someday.  Dwarves, being dwarves, I'm sure will find out a way of brewing anything - from mushrooms to demon entrails.
