Preferred Building material.
« on: December 22, 2007, 01:46:00 am »

I suggest being able to select a preferred building material (Can be as vauge as "Rock" or "Wood" or specific as "Chert Blocks" or "Maple logs").

If you build a building that can be built with your preferred material, the material should appear at the top of the list, regardless of the distance.

Seconded, I really could have used that today for a big human city I was putting together. Probably best if it is an in-game thing, because though the init could work, it could get annoying to have to quit to change that selection.

Maybe something along the lines of "Construct Rock Wall" and "Construct Wood Wall" and "Construct Metal Wall," all as separate buildings?  I usually keep my wood stockpile outside, so when I build exterior walls I have to go through a page and a half of wood to get to the stone blocks.

That doesn't solve the problem as neatly as the original idea.

Supported. Sometimes I just want shiny blue microcline walls everywhere. Possibly a default building material, maybe enough specific enough as to be able to define a default building material per task? As in, only platinum for statues, only microcline for walls, any wood for spikes... should streamline things after an initial configuration.

Sounds like that could be a manager setting like the broker's stocks setting imho.

I'm Greiger Blackdragon, and this idea has my approval.

Um, maybe my manual stone selection hack can be useful?

That should help somewhat, but it seems like it would be a lot to sort through and  it doesn't help with metal or wood.

Once a better construction UI is in, I'm sure this will be handled. The only reason this is annoying is because you currently have to scroll through the list several hundred times to find the proper material just to build a comparatively small building. Once walls and floors are built like bridges, it will be much less annoying.

EDIT: Then again, building above-ground bedrooms will still prove annoying, as it would still take 7 or so individual parts (4 walls, floor, ceiling, door) per bedroom. I trust Toady has a decent solution.
