Do we even want to know what a dwarven science cap looks like?

It looks like this:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Replace the baseball helm with a -bronze helm- and the soda with a barrel of -Dwarven Wine-.

Ok, someone *needs* to draw this.

Hear, hear!  NOw to the fanart thread.

Hm. Well, the design worked in theory, since I've heard of adventurers spontaneously melting in the ocean and in underground pools...

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

There's also been dorfs that have melted while working at the magma forges/smelters due to being wet when they got there.

Bwahaha! Yes, setting a pool directly above the magma does seem to work. Praise be to Science!

Important Science! Notes:
- I used a small pool of 4/7 water above 7/7 lava. Additional lava to the sides did not seem to matter for death rate, although I didn't test extra lava above the pit.
- Most small/medium size creatures won't show any symptoms until 10 seconds in, when they start melting, and will die 5 or 10 seconds later. You'll probably need a pretty long corridor.
- Large creatures partially melt, but seem to be, well, large enough to have enough blood to avoid dying from blood loss. You will get a nice puddle of fat, though.

It will be interesting to see if it still works in 31.04

How many urists long was your corridor and how far from the last water space did they die on average?

You know, . . . for science.

Didn't use a corridor for start, was just a simple 3x3 kiddie pool the goblins could splash around until they melted. It's going to have to be fairly long, though, probably 150/200 tiles to properly murder everything...and that's a bit long for the arena

(I apologize to those trying to do REAL dwarven science in this thread for partly hijacking it; you're doing good work - I hope you appreciate the jokes too.)

I have to imagine any dwarf that witnesses anything killed in this manner would have to either drop into melancholy right away or not really care about anything anymore.

You will need to clean that hallway out with a zamboni.

The smell will never go away.

Melting bug?
I think not! As of the invention of this corridor it is a feature.
Convection shmonvection! Actual convection isn't quite implemented (yet?), but this is as close as it gets.

A bit like tower caps, but more dwarven sciencey.

I'd imagine something like this may also work well, with the added plus of more things being able to go wrong!

WWWWWWWWW
-----H----------
M#WWWW#MMM
-----H-p---------
===============
-----------p--g----
MMMMMMMM#=p#

Legend
W  Water
M  Magma
H  Hatch cover
p  Pressure plate
g  Grate
=  Passage
-- Floor/ceiling
#  Wall

In this there is no standing pool, but a small resevoir kept above the passage. The resevoir is fed from a larger source above through a hatch cover linked to a pressure plate that opens the cover when the resevoir gets under 2/7. (this next part can be replaced with a lever for less automation and more control) The hatch to empty the resevoir is linked to a pressure plate on the passage floor set to go off when walked over.  The water will partially flood the passage way (possibly coming out boiing already) getting anything in it wet. The excess water will drain into a smaller resevoir with a Pressure plate link to the resevoir hatch to shut it when fullish - Thats should be linked to something else for drainage later(screw pump, cistern, cavern, river etc) and then the magma should melt your foes away.

Solution for peacetime/wartime:

Code: [Select]
___________________
_____   ]_[   _____
MAGMA\ WATER /

Whereby ] and [ are raising bridges that lower to cover up the water.
