On a kind of related note, has anybody tried melting ores/metals by warming them with magma?  I don't mean putting them in magma, but having them sit on a floor with 7/7 magma underneath.  Then invaders would get a nice covering of burning hot metal, which ought to finish them off quicker.

Do we even want to know what a dwarven science cap looks like?
Whatever it is, it menaces with spikes of obsidian and elf bone.

really I thought it was a little fast to be figured out... they already figured out how to re-create super artifacts (with burrows), and now this exploit. Looks like a lot of people put their dwarven science caps on lately.

Refer to the helmet that Cuddy made Detritus in Men at Arms (Book titles are underlined right?  It's been so long since public school.).  Yes, it was a helmet made for a Troll, but it was a thinking hat, made by a dwarf and it went Ting!

a 4/7 water pool thing without the magma could also be useful for auto-sanitizing dwarfs smeared in poisonous blood, right?

Has anyone tried this yet?

I just gave it a quick runthrough in arena mode with a 1x10 corridor surrounded by magma on all sides; i managed to kill a dwarf and melt the head-fat off another, but it took a lot of running back and forth through the corridor with each to get it to work at all

O dwarven science, why must you be so cruel as to not let us properly bake our enemies through walls with magma?  :(

Have you tried adding re-dipping pools?  Perhaps the dwarves are getting nice and dry as they melt?

I'm intending to strategically place hatch and pressure plate maintained pools in my hallways and the underground caverns and such to provide dwarves and pets with a water covering to protect them from breath attacks and the like (haven't tried it yet, but I heard that it blocks the stuff). Of course it'll be dangerous so long as the melting bug still exists.

What if you put the pool inside the magma-heated area, and set up creature-sensing pressure plates hooked to a s/r latch to raise bridges (or close doors) to lock the victim in once they enter the area? (The latch is so that the doors/bridges won't open again until you flip a lever)

What about making the magma completely surround the tunnel on all sides? Or will that not increase the heat any?

Could also be improved if somehow the water could be substituted with a beer-batter.

No, its realistic.

I dont think realism is a major concern in a game about alcoholic midgets fighting dragons and soapmen.

Seriously? Urist McDurden's Liposuction Clinic and Soap Factory gets no response?

It's like I don't know you any more, internet.

doesn't seem to matter. They do dry off once entering the corridor after a bit, but re-splashing them just...well, gets them wet again. Then they get dry again. It almost seems like some interaction between the way the rain gets the dwarves covered with water, rather than just wet stuff + heat = MELT. I would wonder if mist would work much the same, but I think i'd have to set up an actual fort for that...and the design would be awkward.

I have 7/7 magma above, below, left, and right...no melting. :\

Look, that's a lot harder to draw than a melting insect.

What if you put the pool inside the magma-heated area

I think this may be a solution? Or would the water itself evaporate?

Like:
Code: [Select]
Side View:

MMMMMMM
-------
 #####
\WWWWW/
-------
MMMMMMM

(Extended to whatever length it takes)

M = Magma
- = Floor
# = Wall (to force flyers into the water)
\ = Ramp
W = Water

If it's any covering (not just water), a more grizzly method would be a corridor surrounded by magma and filled with expendable animals - when the goblins slaughter the kittens, etc. they'll get covered with blood and start to boil.  ;D
