omg this is awesome. possibly the most efficient fortress defense mechanism ever. good job.

but it's efficient therefor I'm not going to use it. Next time make it so that while entering the fort, 3/7 of water gets poured on their heads from a cystern above with some retracting bridges. then make them walk over another retracting bridge that is suspended over a pit of magma. Then watch as each one turns into a puff of smoke right before hitting the magma.

lever activated perma water-fall.

I wonder if melting bodies makes mist... and if it gives happy thoughts...

Has anyone tried this yet?

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

You can just put a drawbridge over the pool.

In the pre-2010 version, the traders and the ambushes are pathing to different things. The traders are looking for the shortest route to the Depot, invaders are looking for meeting rooms. In pre-2010 you can use this to separate the two. (I have ramps headed underground spaced around the edge and tunnels to the depot - which has an "airlock" construction to the rest of the fort.)

1) Does this work in DF2010?
2) If so, add it to the melting trap and you should only be melting non-traders.

Melting bug?
I think not! As of the invention of this corridor it is a feature.

Yes, I for one will be sad when this bug gets fixed feature gets removed, simply because of stuff like this.

Ha, yes, it seems I did.

Everything's better with magma, isn't it?

I wonder if water cools and heats as it evaporates and condenses like in real life...

If so we could build a freezer.

A door would be good. Just lock/unlock the door to allow or disallow access to the area. Thieves making it unlockable could be a problem, so you can just use a standard lever and bridge setup to block it off.
Does it really matter if thieves can get in through the door? XD
It's not the thieves he's caring about. Think about it - you're putting the door up and forbidding it so that your dwarves won't path through it and get themselves killed, right? If a thief gets through, the door becomes unlocked and dwarves can (and because they're stupid probably will) path through it. In order to relock the door you'd have to send a dwarf out to walk through it so they can reclaim the door, too (when the thief gets through, the door is considered to be "taken by invaders" and you have no control over it unless it's reclaimed by your dwarves). Why put the door up at all if the first thief walking into your fortress makes the door's presence practically pointless?

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

Interesting... I had no idea. If this is the case, then it may be worthwhile to make it a floodgate instead.

Ah, another brilliant creation of dwarven science!

Just want to notice. AFAIK restricting traffic only change weight of tile for pathfinding from 2 to 25 (default), so while dwarves don't normally walk through restricted area, they still can freely walk in it. So doors are really the only way.

Also, do melting bug affect other liquids? You know, like blood and especially vomit? If yes, then it would be slightly more dangerous.
