HILARITY
Yay! I made something that inspired Vester to draw! My life means something!

...

...oh wait.

XD Great one, Vester. I am honored, though.

And now Olon and his dwarf friends will spread pools of bug juice across the entire map.

A: Do you have a handy tool for making the isometric displays?
B: If you stick the door behind enough magma length they would die before unlocking it right?

A: Do you have a handy tool for making the isometric displays?
Yep. MS Paint and good old copy/paste.

B: If you stick the door behind enough magma length they would die before unlocking it right?
That's actually a good idea. You could have the door on your fortress side of the magma, and then a floodgate between the water and the magma that you leave open except for when the door doesn't work.

Couldn't a retractable bridge be built over the water, so that in normal times the bridge covers the water trench, and in the case of intruders it is retracted so that the pre-magmawave soak can happen?
Logged
No, its realistic.

I dont think realism is a major concern in a game about alcoholic midgets fighting dragons and soapmen.

Not if you want to stop flyers.
If goblins are your only worry, then your still not worrying about flyers!

I guess after the whole graduation thing I'll write up a little flash program that could make decent illustrations without a lot of clicking and rendering and so forth.

We could build a bridge over the ramps up into the area that flat out blocked the water "during times of peace." Can't lockpick that and I don't think anybody can demolish it from the underside.

Gentlemen, I have the solution.

Instead of a one-tile wall, build a two tile floor. Then build drawbridges that raise onto this floor.

The result? A harmless corridor in peacetime, burning death in wartime.

Do this:

Code: [Select]
OUTSIDE
.......................
.......................
XXXXXXXXX>>>XXXXXXXX..X
XXXXXXXXXWWWXX........X
XXXXXXXXXWWWXX..XXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXX>>>XX........X
XXXXXXXXX...XXXXXXXX..X
XXXXXXXXX...XX........X
XXXXXXXXX...XX..XXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXX...XX........X
XXXXXXXXX...XXXXXXXX..X
XXXXXXXXX...XX........X
XXXXXXXXX...XX..XXXXXXX
.......................
.......................
INSIDE

Traffic zone the water to be restricted. High traffic zone the long passage, so any non dwarves will take the short route.

As a backup measure you can put traps along the long path so that if for some reason some goblins go there they will end up in cages or shredded by weapon traps full of discs.

This should force all uninvited guests through the puddle to get wet, and then have magma right after that so they cook, and by the time they reach your meeting hall they should drop dead within easy loot range.

I'm surprised it took this long for someone to suggest doing this. I came up with a similar plan weeks ago, but considering I'm not playing at the moment (waiting for some bugfixes, like the unkillable forgotten beasts, nobles on strike due to mayor going nuts, health care), it'll probably get fixed anyways (before I get around to using it).

really I thought it was a little fast to be figured out... they already figured out how to re-create super artifacts (with burrows), and now this exploit. Looks like a lot of people put their dwarven science caps on lately.

Do we even want to know what a dwarven science cap looks like?
