What do nations do on mourning days?
« on: April 20, 2010, 03:09:03 pm »

The 21st is China's mourning day for the recent earthquake. Actually it has already begun in Beijing time. Cancellation of all public entertainment activities has caused some people to voice their "concerns" about their private plans. While I view those people in great contempt, I also wonder: is such cancellation a common practice during mourning in other countries? What do other countries' governments do on mourning days? Somewhere I read that mourning for the Polish politicians also involved cancellation of entertainment programs. What about others?
Of course, the fewer mourning the better.

We have a minute's silence for Remembrance Day ( remembering World War I soldiers that died etc ).

That's pretty much it. Oh, and we buy fake poppies.

We usually have a moment of silence for big tragedies here, and fly American flags at half mast.

In the UAE, radio plays Quran. If the guy is important enough, you getdays off of school, so it sort of leads to people hoping that someone will die.

You forgot 7/7.

And us channel islanders get Liberation Day, to remember the people who helped get the Nazis off of the islands.

Yeah, we fly the flags at half mast. Not much else though, since no matter how terrible or tragic it is, someone doesn't care.

In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
         In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
         In Flanders fields.

...

Sorry, I love that poem.

I've seen some WWI graveyards in Flanders. They are... awesome (not like hotdogs), for lack of a better word. Awe-inspiring, I guess.

Image doesn't do it justice. The atmosphere is... weird.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anyhow, in the Netherlands we've got for WWII a ceremony, and 2 minutes of silence in the whole country. Buses, trains, most cars, everything stops. It's surreal, and very cool. I've seen tourists who think they landed in the twilight zone, as if the time suddenly just... stops...
