Chained war dogs. You need more of them.

I actually once had a cat cause a kobold thief to bleed to death.

Chained war grizzly bears.

Chained war grizzly bears.
Ha, yes, I just recently discovered the win that was this. I thought you couldn't train any sort of bear, since black bears couldn't be trained.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

Now all we need is the ability to assign our soldiers mounts.

Russia, meet Dwarven bear cavalry.  8)

Back on task though, kobolds are more fun if you mod them to be a little beefier and give them a minute chance to succeed in war, at least during worldgen.

I haven't even gotten any kobold thieves in the new version. It's bizarre.
You might not have any kobold civs nearby. They usually go extinct in worldgen nowadays, try stopping it at around year 200.

Yeah, I already reported the issue in the buglist. The default Island maps don't generate enough caves, so kobolds simply don't even spawn in the first place.

As mentioned, just doubling the mountain caves lets a kobold civ spawn.
Whether they survive worldgen is another matter entirely. The ones I've seen have been lucky enough though.
I had one civ get beat on by all manner of mega and semi-megabeasts for 1050 years of worldgen. The tough little bastards survived throughout.
