no dwarven caravans? what gives?
« on: April 19, 2010, 08:41:22 am »

I've been playing a fortress for three years now that has not gotten a dwarven caravan, which stinks because I was relying on that to get an anvil.

I've gotten the elven trader, but no human either.  I had dwarves, humans and elves listed as neighbors.  I do have a trade depot that is accessible by wagon.  I have not received any messages about "caravan could not find route so skips you" or anything.

So I'm wondering whether the caravan may just be running late, and I should wait, or if its not coming.   Thanks.

Probably Dwarf civilizations can't reach your site.

Is there any way to tell for certain, either before embarking, or in the game?

Yes, by checking civs tab on site selection screen. It will show what civs can reach the site and what relations you have with them.

I thought that was the case.  It showed Dwarves on that screen.  With a P, which I assume means Peace.

Keep in mind that you will see "Dwarves" as neighbor civilization on the embark screen even their civilization is dead. Watch the map for this sign here: µ . If you find this, then this means that this is a dead town. If that dead town was the only dwarven city on the planet, then you won't ever see a dwarven caravan, diplomat, and only very few immigrants (which can be a blessing, of course.)

No, not the fortess mode civ screen.
I mean the one which is shown when you select site for embark.

Hm, I'll have to go back and look.  I was pretty certain that it showed Dwarves there as well.

Thanks for the help.

You should keep in mind Lytha's notice as well. It shows your home civ all the time, even if its actually unavailable.

Does it show humans?  It's odd that you're not getting them either.

No, not the fortess mode civ screen.
I mean the one which is shown when you select site for embark.
Specifically, he's meaning that you end up seeing something like this

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

I'm pretty sure that I didn't have "No Trade" on my site screen.

I'll have a look at the site and the world I'm playing on when I get home from work.

Is there a way to discover the seed and such for already-generated worlds?

The distance from your fort to their mountain home matters now.  As it seems that they are a good deal away from where you embarked, it could potentially take years to reach your fortress.

The difficulty of the terrain may also factor into it.

Also, given that anvils are now much cheaper to get on embark, you could have just done that. You can also change the number of embark points in the advanced worldgen settings. Requires a new worldgen obviously.
