to easily test this, you could change it so the only names male dwarves can get are 'Urist' and the only names females can get are "lisa" or something, then check your history for "Urist has married Urist" or "Lisa is the daughter of Lisa and Lisa"

Would it breed with...itself?

Could do something cool with that!

If it were an INTELLIGENT creature, no.  Breeding occurs when there is a marriage.  Due to the way that spore sacs must be aligned in sentient species, all sentient creatures are strictly monogamous to death.

More proof that dwarven reproduction works via quantum entanglement.

Could you make a caste of dwarves that appear male, but function as females?

guess a question needs to be brought up about transgender, as in both male and female tags. slight joke but mostly serous in how it would function, can't test atm...

This is from a while ago, but still seems to be accurate:

what would happen if a cast were given both the MALE and FEMALE tags?
In this case, as it's stored as a variable instead of a flag, last tag wins, and there's no further trouble.

So, alas, not much of interest happens.  You just get whichever gender is last on the list.

No, because reproduction hinges on using the [male] and [female] tags, and those tags carry with them pronouns and pregnancy.

Toady has suggested that because homosexuality is a part of real life sexuality and culture, and varies from people to people, it could make for some interesting drama down the line. It would be sad/funny to see a pair of dwarves persecuted after their homosexual relationship comes to light in a heteronormative society.

Especially if the sheriff who locked them up was secretly having an affair with the king consort.

It's like, there are things that aren't funny in real life, and then in fiction they're also tragic, but somehow in the context of dwarf fortress it goes right on through tragedy and comes out as comedy. Like cannibalism!

I personally think the idea of two gay dwarfs would result in enough beard friction to burn down the fortress.

The Elves were beautiful, Mistral Thrax admitted, in and elvish way, but it was his belief that the gods grew disappointed after a time because the elves -- being elves -- were essentially decorative but not particularly functional. They were content simply to live long lives and to exist. They did not nothing of any real value, in the opinion of Mistral Thrax."
