Fun with trailing dust breath.
« on: April 18, 2010, 09:14:17 pm »

While testing various types of material breaths, I noticed that creatures, when using a trailing dust flow, would on occaision be propelled by the heavy dust in the direction of the flow. In other words, I have created rocket dragons.

After further studies, it appears to me that the creature with the rocket breath must have the ability to fly, lest when the dust propels it upwards it will fall back down and sustain serious injuries.

Oh that is cool!
Would you share the code used, or are you keeping that as a secret formula...

It's just a breath attack which uses a directional dust type of material.

Cool find. Also that's fun that it pushes other critters around.

I vaguely remember something saying that the dust breath attacks are a little broken. Seems like it acts almost as if it were a hammer hitting stuff and sending it flying.

Oh yeah...

Towards the bottom... physics are wonky with it. Could be a lot of fun and a lot of heartache to get it to act right.

For me it looks like a cave-in mechanics (where the dust pushes things around).

The problem stems from it being generated on the same square as the creature using it and thus is also affected by it, Toady will either have to make it ignore the user or make it projected from one square towards the target.

Worse then a rocket dragon, try giving the dust breath attack to a Giant Desert Scorpion or GCS and set it to use poison instead of dust, not content with just poisoning your character it'll fling you around.

"Electric mist"? Care to elaborate?

That has nothing to do with the rocket breath. When I was testing it, I happened to use it on the creature I finished most recently and didn't bother changing certain aspects of it.

What do you really need to turn Elves into Dwarves? Mutation could make them grow a beard; insanity effects could make them evil-minded, aggressive, tree-hating cave dwellers, and instant, full necrosis of their lower legs could make them short.
