Music: The Sith / Endar Spire The bombardment wakes our hero up. Get used to overhead shots of him sleeping, by the way, they're going to show up a lot in this game.
Fortunately, Ensign Exposition... I mean, Trask Ulgo is here to help! I dearly love KotOR, but let's just say it doesn't have the most immersive tutorial in the world. The sequel was better at it, but then again the sequel was better at a lot of things.
You can't even choose to play it as a non-tutorial, more's the pity. Ah, well, if it isn't going to do things seriously, neither am I.
"Now hurry up, we have to find Bastila! We have to make sure she makes it off the ship alive!"
... Our options are equally stupid here, so let's go with the first one.
Fortunately, Trask lives only to provide exposition and make obvious statements. He's
Ric Olie's distant ancestor, apparently.
"One of our primary duties is to guarantee her survival in the event of enemy attack! You swore an oath just like everyone else on this mission. Now it's time to make good on that oath!"
"I know all about your repuatation, how you used to smuggle spice and blasters along the Corellian Run. I guess the Republic figured since they couldn't catch you, they might as well hire you."
"And I'll admit, the Republic is in desperate need of someone with your kind of skills. Desperate enough to overlook your shady past."
"But now that you've signed on for this mission you're part of the Republic fleet. And Bastila needs all troops at her side during this attack!"
Yes yes yes I know how to do my job thank you.
Suited up, are you happy now?
Apparently.
"We should stick together; you'll have more success with a party than on your own."
The party selection screen. This will be more meaningful when we actually have more than 2 NPCs to choose from.
...Locking your crew members in when you most need them seems counterproductive to me.
Going through the door...
We're contacted by Carth Onasi, ace pilot and person who would have been the whiniest character in the Star Wars canon if it weren't for that Anakin Skywalker fellow.
"That was Carth contacting us on our portable communicators. He's one of the Republic's best pilots! He's seen more combat than the rest of the Endar Spire's crew put together."
"If he says things are bad, you better believe it. We have to get to the bridge to help defend Bastila!"
"There's a map of the Endar Spire and a copy of Carth's message in your electronic journal, just in case we get separated."
"Let's move out."
This is pretty much all you'll ever get out of droids. At least generic ones like this.
First skill use: Security. This is of course an easy one just to give you a chance to see how it's used.
On the other side, the Sith and a Republic soldier are fighting it out. He goes down, and Ensign Exposition provides useful information once again.
"For the Republic!"
The battle screen! There are buttons to select an attack type by clicking up and down above that sword, so long as you have the feats for them. We have level 1 Critical Strike right now, but since it makes you miss more often than you likely already will...
Also, see Trask in front of us. Blaster-using NPCs still happen to love running up and fighting in close quarters, completely negating the advantage of them having blasters in the first place. At least we can't accidentally hit him.
In any case, it's an easy battle.
As is the next one.
The container in that room has a long sword in it, finally allowing for some dual-wielding!
Around the corner, the Sith and Republic are going at it again. Note that the explosion is caused by one of the Sith throwing the grenade into melee, at the cost of one of their own soldiers. Have to love expendability.
There are five to fight at once here; I had to use two medpacks to keep alive. Scoundrels don't tend to take hits too well.
