Where the battle takes place in adventure mode
« on: December 21, 2007, 09:43:00 pm »

I suggest there should be something which would help player understand where the battle which is written about, but not seen on the screen, takes place. Perhaps there must be written something like "You hear sounds of battle from north-east". It's really irritating when you can't find where your groupmates are fighting, or where an elephant is killing an elven child.
Consider it please, I think it's not hard to be done and it would be really useful.

I don't think you should be able to know exactly what happens. Take ADOM, for example - it just gives you a "You hear a scream" message, or something like that. In case of DF and the fact that knowing where does the fighting take place is indeed a useful feature, the message could be like this:

"You hear loud sounds of fighting from the northwest", with "loud" replaced with faint/far away/etc. to indicate relative distance, and the direction changed accordingly. Since you sometimes hear stuff happen from another Z level, the message could say "from above" or "from below" instead of giving a direction at those times.

To increase atmospheric value, the messages could differ the middle part too. The template would be "You hear [distance] [specific sound] from [direction]." The specific sound could be "goblin screams", "sounds of hammerstrikes", and anything else that could be identified. Sounds like "growls of wolves" could help you locate the wolf pack that's ambushed you in the night or dense fog.

At some point, even world features could give off sounds. You could hear rivers, forests, caves (immensely useful, but what do caves sound like? Maybe bats' sounds?), and pretty much anything.

And messages detailing every hit should still get generated, but rather only for fighting happening in your view.
