« on: April 18, 2010, 02:10:44 pm »

So, come on, guys, recommend me some books / book series! Preferably hard scifi / fantasy.

Examples of book series I've enjoyed in the past:
Robert E Howard Hyperboria mythos
Cthulhu mythos
Prince of Nothing series
A Song of Ice and Fire

Obligatory post:

Anything by Terry Pratchett, but especially his later work, which showcases his growing of the beard.

The Tomorrow series, seven books beginning with Tomorrow, When the War Began.

The Culture novels by Ian M. Banks... Consider Phlebas is a good place to start, especially if you then read the others.

Hyperborea mythos? You mean the Hyborian, right? Which means Conan, right? Because if you don't, you need to. It's the highlight of Howard's career. Those stories made me the (freak) I am today!

God damn it, I got beat down by a rookie.

Technically, I was correct... In a way. >.>

If you enjoyed A Song of Ice and Fire you would also enjoy Guy Gavriel Kay's The Lions of Al-Rassan.

*ahem*
Rookie? Rookie, sir? I take affront that that! I am no Sword&Sorcery Rookie! I happen to have 2 Conan posters staring at me RIGHT NOW.
Seriously, actually. I have the theatrical release poster for Conan the Barbarian, starring Arnold, my personal hero, and then a second, more violent one, because why the hell not have two Conan posters in your room?
...
Yeah. Pretend you didn't read any of that.

I'm going to have to recommend Asimov. The Robot and Empire series are really the height of science fiction, in my experience.

I found the Inda series, by Sherwood Smith to be a surprisingly good read, though the fourth is fucking hard to find. I still haven't been able to find it, I had to break down and order a hardback :C
Expensive as hell.

The series:
Inda
The Fox
King's Shield
Treason's Shore

I'm not going to lie, both Cain and Gaunt seem to have been losing steam lately.

If you want a terribly easy, but fun read, try the Redwall series. Especially Lord Brocktree and Salamandastrom.

Ender's Game is the top of Scifi, and the Shadow subseries is pretty good too.
Hammer's Slammers if you want mercenary fiction.

Salvation War is just made of win, plus it's free and online.

I'm not really keen on sci-fi or fantasy but the three Earthsea books by Ursula le Guin are really good. Evocative and manage to be quite philosophical.

As usual, I'm chiming in to second the Asimov recommendation. Dude's genius.

Also, Snow Crash by Neal Stevenson.
