If you're looking with the site finder, don't bother - there's magma all over the underground once you go deep enough, and any 3x3 embark space should have some adamantine on it. Chasms and bottomless pits don't seem to exist any more, I think, but there are colossal caverns underground now.

Any 3x3 or larger embark is guaranteed to have adamantine in it; any 2x2 is very likely. Adamantine occurs once in a 2x2 block, there's just a small chance that your embark will fall into the space in between four veins.

So every 16x16 area has 64 adamantine pipes? Or does the <redacted> replace one?

Not sure; Toady's hinted before that it doesn't necessarily, but dunno where the quote is. I think that thing is totally random, so I guess it hypothetically could or it might not.

From what I've seen, magma usually comes in the form of a magma sea below all the cave systems.  The adamantine is usually in a very inconvenient location in that magma sea.

In order to get the thinner and safer adamantine that usually stretches into the magma sea, you have to cast obsidian around it.
I like the dwarfy feel of doing that.
