Legendary engravers are pretty believable, actually. I mean, these are the genii who can engrave what looks like a tunnel, and have a dwarf walk into the wall.

Actually, dwarves walking into walls isn't very uncommon.

Hmm.

I generally see engravers as the dwarven equivalent to the artist. We have legendary artists, don't we? Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent Van Gogh etc.

Salvadore Dali, Michelangelo, Banksy as you have said, Henri Rousseau, I suppose even musicians. Engraving at this moment is the closest we have to dwarven art, besides embroidery and the odd design carved on an object.

Engravers probably best correspond to muralists and sculptors of monumental stuff to adorn architecture.

Whether they're added to the legends or not..legendary status means quite a bit in dwarven society. You're the equivalent of nobility at that point.

As for engravers, I see them as Michelangelos, Leonardos and the rest. But for that to mean something, legendary has to set a bar that is harder to top than just producing 1,000 stone crafts.

Rather than limiting legendary status to a hard number, there could be a trade off for having so many legendaries (other than the fact they screw your non-legendary dwarves over when the economy kicks in.) Like, legendary dwarves of the same craft profession automatically form grudges with one another, representing their professional rivalry to be considered "the" legendary whatever. Sure, Michelangelo may not have fueded with Leonardo directly, but they lived continents apart sometimes. We're talking about two "legendary" craftmasters, or more, in the same house.

Legendaries are way better than nobility. Legendary dwarves get a huge royal bedroom, royal dining room, office, you name it. Anything they want, they get instantly. Nobles get a lever and a locked door.

Long term, I think this needs to be addressed by making it much harder to reach legendary. You should be lucky to have a few legendary dwarves in a fortress, not the current status where one dwarf can literally become legendary in every single skill (except lying). Moods should only affect dwarves who are already highly competent professionals, and it probably shouldn't be possible to reach legendary without a mood. Legends aren't formed without inspiration. If this were the case, it wouldn't be possible for any non-mood profession to produce legends.

I love the fact that I asked what was basically a rhetorical question about pump operation, and got some really good stories, an economic breakdown of a fortress, and ideas about dwarven art.

Anything that happens in your land is your fault.  If the merchants decided to show up next to a volcano and jump in, it would still (somehow) be your fault.  If their liaison dies of old age on your doorstep, it's your fault.  If you accidentally lock the elves in the depot and wait until they're insane to capture them in cages and then lock the next group of elves in the depot and unleash the insane elves their cages, that's still somehow your fault.

You don't have to be mad to enjoy dwarf fortress.

But it certainly helps.

I love Banksy's work, especially the stuff on the Palestine Wall (or whatever it's called)

Legendary pump operator... what type of weird legend involves one of those.  I'm trying to imagine the climax to a story where the only solution was to pump liquids really well.

Never saw The City of Ember?

Terrible movie as it was, there was a pump involved in the salvation of the city (and a dude who totally sat there holding a screwdriver so it didn't fall apart).

I don't agree with you topic creator to a certain extent.

There is no reason they cannot become very skill at it.

Now there is no reason why anyone should think it is very impressive either

Guys, there is a very important distinction here.
Legendary does not necessarily mean that one is told of in legends.
As of now, it is just a descriptor. It's figurative. It's like saying "I decimated that army" and someone saying "Well, technically, you didn't kill one-tenth of their troops".
Maybe there should be a literal legendary, I dunno. But just because it's called "legendary" doesn't mean you must interpret a dwarf as literally legendary.

Legendary is not a synonym for epic. It has a very specific use and your excuses do nothing to change that.
