Not all skills can be trained to legendary

Skills such as pump operating and cleaning should only be trainable up to a certain level, such as "skilled". The appropriate stat gains, however, will remain.

The resulting party killed 20 dwarves, crippled 2 more and the remaining 9 managed to get along and have a nice party.

Legendary pump operator... what type of weird legend involves one of those.  I'm trying to imagine the climax to a story where the only solution was to pump liquids really well.

Anything that happens in your land is your fault.  If the merchants decided to show up next to a volcano and jump in, it would still (somehow) be your fault.  If their liaison dies of old age on your doorstep, it's your fault.  If you accidentally lock the elves in the depot and wait until they're insane to capture them in cages and then lock the next group of elves in the depot and unleash the insane elves their cages, that's still somehow your fault.

Curse you for making me go there.   Be grateful I'm not going to share the terrible innuendos.

Mayor Urist: "Well Ladies, Gentlemen, Children, Babies, and Dakost. We've finally managed t' plug the breach Dakost made in tha aquifer a month ago. I know ye were all worried, but Vucar Gikutunibked the poomps around tha clock day after day, week without stopping for rest or food or water or anythin, an' we were able to get tha masons in and wall up the breach clean as a whistle. Thanks to ol' Vucar here, we even managed t' keep oor homes from bein' flooded."

*A child cautiously raises a hand*

Mayor Urist: "Aye there little one. Ye have a question?"

Child: "Where did Vucar put all the water?"

Mayor Urist: "There wasnae time t'be picky, so Vucar flooshed it all doon the valley t' the south. The Humans say it formed a wall as tall as a colossus an' washed that ol goblin bastard Gangox right oot of is tower an into tha sea."

Cut to a goblin on a desert island beach in his bed, wearing his pyjamas

Gangox: "I think I wet the bed"

Cut back to dwarves

All: "Hooray!"

Narrator: And so the day was saved by a Pump Operator, who would live on in legend as the dwarf who drowned a thousand elves, and bowled over a goblin fortress with a tidal wave inexplicably emerging from the mountains.

And so, Moshe Rabbenu arrived on the shore of the Red Sea, armed with little more than a flock of tantruming peasants and a single, finely-crafted wooden pump..

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

How many blue collar, workplace legends have existed throughout history? Think of all the times the seasoned veteran has told the rookie "you remind me of someone. Johnny Humbert was his name... he could hammer fifteen spikes and not miss a single strike. Didn't help when the TB hit him, mind you..."

Exactly. If there's a skill, anyone can be unusually skilled at it, even legendary. Why not let this apply to dwarf fortress?

I'd go further and say that there's got to be a limit to the number of legendaries of a profession you can have. One legendary pump operator is silly....a whole phalanx of grizzled, pump-hardened veterans?

The same kind of applies to all professions. Four legendary engravers? Five legendary miners? Some of those sound cool...some of them sound misapplied.

But there are links to legendary status and the dwarven economy that need to be worked out too. Legendaries are great for the over all economy and fortress operations. They're often the only ones that have rooms by the time the economy kicks in. You can't yank the biggest windfall a fortress economy has without putting something back.

I think legendary is really just a label. It doesn't actually mean that the dwarf in question is in legends.
For example, when Barney Stinson says something will be legendary - well, that's probably not a good example, because he probably thinks that his exploits will literally be sung about in bards' songs, but when normal people say something is legendary, it's figurative.

Legendary engravers are pretty believable, actually. I mean, these are the genii who can engrave what looks like a tunnel, and have a dwarf walk into the wall.

Actually, dwarves walking into walls isn't very uncommon.

Hmm.

What do you really need to turn Elves into Dwarves? Mutation could make them grow a beard; insanity effects could make them evil-minded, aggressive, tree-hating cave dwellers, and instant, full necrosis of their lower legs could make them short.
