Well...Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure had a time traveling phone booth, and an actor who's a complete tool (Keanu Reeves). And it was awesome. So it's kind of like Bill and Ted. Except with aliens. And a sexy Bill.

Doctor Who is about an alien, addressed as 'the doctor' who looks human and has a vehicle that can go to pretty much any time or location. They generally travel with companions, usually human, and randomly appear in different times and places. There is invariable some disaster that needs to be averted, usually involving some nefarious alien plot. The doctor doesn't carry weapons and the series is probably more like MacGyver that Stargate...

I am with the Tom Baker crowd too. He was really good at being alien but friendly. The earlier doctors seemed pretty good too, but after Tom Baker they seemed to gradually lose something...

As for actually selling it, meh, can't be bother selling anything right now...

Also, he has two hearts, regenerates with a new body and personality each time he's killed, and it's gettting to him in the last few doctors. Technically, this current doctor is either the last, or the second to last, one, since an arbitrary limit of 12-regens was mentioned in the 'old' series.

If you just watch the first season of the new series (last name of the Doctor's actor is Eccleton, I believe.  I'm new, I don't know many of them yet) it sums things up fairly well.  First couple of episodes aren't very strong, but they reasonably good, and it just gets better.

Of course, you could always start from the beginning of the original series as well.  But I don't know how good that is 'cause I haven't seen it yet.  Probably very good, given how big it is in England.


I thought it was 13 re-gens?  I dunno. That would be 14 doctors including the original if I've got it right, though.

First 'new' Dr was Eccleston. And yeah, it start off weak, but Piper wasn't really an actress at the time. She gets really good as it goes along.

Haha. Not really good as in well done, but good in the same way HhttG was good. The monsters, for example, were quite clearly plastic buckets and/or bin liners. But still, they were fun, and more than a few children hid behind sofas. The new ones are better, and the Angels are downright freaking scary.

Common consensus is: It depends when you started watching. Most people nowadays prefer the new series, but there are still a few who have favorite Drs from the old series, Baker being the most popular of the old ones. I preferred Tennant, from the last few.

I've been watching Doctor Who since the 9th Doctor. It's been okay, entertaining in some episodes, nightmare fuel in others. The episode "Blink". Makes you think twice about statues. A pretty interesting creature concept. Rather rough episode. The one with Pompeii was rather annoying for the Doctor.

I can't quite decide on the 11th Doctor yet. David Tennant was rather entertaining at times, had a long run as well compared to the previous Doctor.

As for the recent episode here in the States, what was with the technicolor Daleks? Then again, I was distracted for some of the episode, so I missed some of it. I assume color is rank for them.

That episode was totally awesome until the new Daleks were introduced, at which point it all went to crap. Also Winston Churchill is the man.

Actually, I think Batman meets Stargate meets Bill and Ted is fairly accurate. I would say, if possible, start with the beginning of the new series. Lots of the writing in the Chris Eccelston stuff isn't great, but I think it would be hard to jump in when Tennant starts without it. And the Tennant run was the shit.

Yeah, the David Tennant episodes were mostly well written. It's a shame they went out at the same time.

See, to me the cheesiness is part of the charm of the old series. It had that distinct BBC production value to it--the aliens made Star Trek's "prostethic forehead" aliens look cutting-edge at times, but when the setting was Victorian England for whatever reason, it was meticulous.

But the writing was just so fun. Pulp sci-fi at its best.

There's a very simple reason why technicolour daleks were introduced: merchandising.  Doctor Who is getting its budget cut, so they need to help claw back some money by having new action figures now that every child in the country has a miniature Dalek.

Don't try watching the entire old series... it just isn't possible.  A lot of the episodes are just lost (if you have an old tape of one, you can actually phone up the BBC to check if fills in one of their gaps).  You'd think they'd archive it all, but apparently not.
