The negative side of immortality
« on: April 18, 2010, 03:56:38 am »

I assume that an introduction should be done

For any practical usage or purpose, I'll be known as Lugash to you. Been lurking around this forum for just about six months now and a recent event finally got me to register.

The event: After a day of misshappenings in the world of gaming I still decided to Embark once more and face the perils of Dwarf Fortress (v. 0.31.03). As I am carving out an acceptable shelter for my chubby minions a uninvited guest shows up... a bloody bronze colossus. After all the constant reading here I am fully aware of how indistructable these gods of war are, so the decision is made: Seal the fortress and search for the very doors of hell itself!
As for the dwarfs outside? Well, no sacrifice, no victory...

Though after a while I notice that a child is hunting for vermins, "hmm, must be an outsider" so I get the idea of checking how the, oh so honorable, guest is doing. I zoom to him, but can't spot him. Repeat action a couple of times. Still no sign of him so i decided to look with the "k" command instead of "v". Now guess what? The wheel-of-death is stuck within a cage. The bronze menace stumble into my my wildlife trap area. I can hardly believe it. I hope that he'll enjoy an eternity in a cage!

So riddle me this, how come that no one ever mentioned this? Is it a to obvious way to handle them or haven't anybody else discoverd this?

Oh, and one more thing. Just after I notice the trapped metal-giant, a hydra feels like passing by... should be possible to trap that one to, right? If so, then I'll be forced to throw them into the arena and we can all enjoy "The clash of the titans"!

Quote from: 40d:trap from the wiki
A cage trap is one of the most effective ways to defeat powerful beasts, as even a glass cage (aquarium/terrarium) can imprison a Bronze Colossus.

guess this hasn't changed in 2010

I think no one mentioned it because in discussions titled "how to kill BC" players discuss not "how to get rid of BC", but, guess what, "how to kill BC". :)

How to kill a BC eh?  Ever managed to accidentally fill your aquarium with magma?  I don't know about you, but I have to take a trip to the petstore everyweek now because of that simple mistake.

Yes, only FBs and demons have trapavoid. Titans and megabeasts can be caged.
I have cyclops, giant and hydra in my animal stockpiles here.

Hi!

I have not played in it myself, but I think the arena has caused many people to face on combat and combat alone. So, aspects in the broader perspective of fortress mode may be missed.

At least Toady's working slowly toward more realistic cages  - I notice that caged undead release huge clouds of miasma if stored indoors now.

I wonder if terrariums would help against that, with the ability to seal things better.

That's not true... The titans that have visited my fort have waltzed right over my traps without setting them off, when they've gone anywhere near them that is. Usually they just hop over the walls and bypass them, but some have circled back and walked over cage traps.

Personally I was quite aware that colossi weren't able to avoid traps, though, and have cage traps set up at all my entrances in case one shows up (and for the wildlife). (I wasn't aware that there was a thread discussing ways to kill them, though :P)

so you guys know that with a hopefully a creature that can only be killed by melting or atom smashing you can train this BC to become a WAR BC and sic them into the beyond to fight those demons. still chances of them surviving would be close to 50 percent since  magma/fire types can take down a bronze and steam would just lead to a endless battle unless you still have some fire demons left.
