Help!? What happened?!
« on: April 17, 2010, 06:53:53 pm »

I found a 1x1 tile of water randomly underground, so I dug it out. 7 muddy floorspaces won't cause me any issue, I thought.

But for some reason the tile never drained, and more and more water kept coming out of nowhere. The tile had a floor, and no water was coming from above because I channelled down into it (which is how I know it was only 1 tile of water), and was surrounded by rock.

I just had to abandon my fortress. It's only fun if you know WHY you died :-(

Infinite water source is infinite. This is why I always have doors all over my forts. Compartmentalize.

I always avoid embarking in areas with the curvy line next to rock names.

Aquifers are eeeeeviiiil.

Congratulations on tapping the aquifer!  That's always fun the first time.

Just a tip - if the game warns you about something special about a site before you embark on it, you're likely to run into something new.

Aquifers are real-world objects.  They are layers of soil (and sometimes porous stone) that are permeated in water.  They generally are a little ways down, with the topsoil being relatively dry.  It's often hard to dig through them, because water will seep out into the gap you made - you've essentially made a big dry space for the water to move into via osmosis-like processes.

And that's why the warning said "it may be difficult to obtain stone here."  That's the important thing to know starting out, really, because stone is such a widely used resource.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I thought an aquifier took over a whole z-layer, so I assumed it couldn't possibly be one as I'd done tonnes of digging already on that layer. I also don't remember getting any warnings during the embark... Could it be something else?

I don't know, was it near the edge, and did any of the biomes adjacent to your fort have an aquifer in them?

I always avoid embarking in areas with the curvy line next to rock names.

To bad you can't have an aquifer in an evil biome be made of blood... (or at least bloody water.  or magma.)

If any biomes in the area you embark upon have an aquifer it still warns you, I just experienced that just a little while ago.

A single-tile aquifer?
That's a new one.

This *could* be some kind of bug.

I've seen this once and I can confirm that it's not ordinary aquifer behavior.  It was on a beach/coast map, don't know if that had anything to do with it.  If you have a save where the tile hasn't been mined out yet, it might be worth making a report on the tracker.

AFAIK, aquifers are tracked by a single flag in memory, per tile. Some sort of corruption of a single value - maybe by a problem with a third party app or just a general error - could theoretically have added said tag to a tile.

It's more likely a flaw in map generation than memory corruption.  If I see it again, I'll check whether it reproduces from world params.

Sound like an awesome feature to me.
A magical infinite watersource of doom. A powerful water god, entombed in the depths of the earth, waiting to be released yet again and flood the world with his glory.
