hunting?
« on: April 17, 2010, 06:46:02 pm »

Okay, in my last few fortress, I've embarked on areas where hunting is basically the only source of food until I hit underground. The only issue is, hunting never works!
Before I report this as a bug, I'm wondering if there isn't something I'm doing wrong.
I'm assigning a dwarf as a hunter, making a crossbow, making bolts, using the military screen to assign a number of bolts to my hunters, and then...?
They won't pick up the bolts, and they won't hunt anything!
I've even tried recruiting the hunter as a military dwarf and having them chase the animals down (not fast enough, sadly :( )
What should I do!

It's a bug.  And it's already been reported (several times).

perhaps you need an arsenal dwarf to equip him as with the military?

sorry. searching the forum for various hunting related topics (and the wiki) gave me no results.

I know that hasn't helped in my case, with just the original seven. The designated hunter picks up a bow, a quiver, some bolts, and has the hunting labor enabled, but just won't hunt. And there were huntable animals on the map at the time I checked.

I haven't been able to get dwarves to use crossbows as anything but hammers in this new release, either hunting or military, and I'm not the only one. But it's strange because that isn't the case for everyone, which makes it harder to track down and stomp.

Have you made a quiver? Hunters seem to need quivers to store their bolts.

Also, when a hunter 'cancels hunt: no ammunition', you can try to disable and then re-enable their hunting labour. That can encourage them to pickup some more ammunition and go hunting.

In the new version, when huntng works, it's really good. Each animal produces so much meat, as well as other biproducts, that one hunter can feed over 20 dwarves on their own.

Here's how you can get hunting to work in the new version.

Hunters need a quiver (and bolts and a crossbow obviously).
You also need to assign bolts to your hunters from the ammunition screen in the military section. I think the game doesn't realize that bolts have been assigned until you change the amount from the default 100 bolts. I usually assign 20-30 and that seems to work.

Wait a bit after that. If the hunter doesn't start hunting, toggle the hunting labor off and back on. It sometimes takes a while before he realizes that he has everything he needs to start hunting.
