Help Please! Farming

Ok i have begun playing fortress mode and im having trouble finding out how to get a famr up and running.
I have managed to create mud underground by mining into an underground water source but it only lasts a tiny bit before it all dries up  :'(
So my plants never grow and when it rains i get about 1 or 2 units of water for only like a day....

You don't need to keep the water there, just the mud! As long as water has run over soil it goes muddy, then your set to build a farm without having to worry about adding water ever again.

no, you need only water the soil once.

ok thanks for that guys. Ill go try that now.
Smash open a well and build a plot quickly  ;D

If i kept the farm near the well and whenever it rained they were smothered in water would that have an effect on them?

Shouldn't- but some bugs with water on dwarves right now...

Just build a floodgate/lever next to a river/small pool and flood the area/close the floodgate and build farm.  Also remember to put EVERYONE to gathering (A lot of ppl anyway) if you're building a big farm so the stuff doesn't rot.  I just built a HUGE farm and I have 30 guys working it.  .Er..dorfs.
