Bring back "no pausing"!
« on: November 26, 2006, 01:18:00 pm »

I remember reading an old thread where Toady said that he used to have an option to remove all or most pauses in the game, but he took it out at some point. Seeing as how I, and probably many other people, like to run DF in the background while attending to other things and checking in every once in a while, I think this should be added back in. Even if it is incomplete in its implementation, I'm sure I'm not the only one here who would appreciate such an option.

Thanks for your feedback, Toady!

Actually I'd like to be able to customize what events to pause on. We currently pause on all sorts of things that I just don't care about (or find disruptive) and often miss important events in the message spam.

For example, while I don't mind the pause for the start of fey moods I do find the pause for the claiming of a workshop and the start of construction annoying. Likewise with the current ~10 year lifespan, 200 population cap, and lunatic immigration of fortresses I have absolutely no intrest or concern with the actual dwarven birthrate. Thus the pause and zoom to dwarf births is a bloody nuisance for me. However with farming and food production being so critical and oversight intensive I get annoyed when I miss the start of spring by several months when I fail to notice a one line announcement amongst the spam. On some of my maps the arrival of the elven or human caravan is the first indication of a new year aside from that one announcement and the date on the stocks page. So I'd love to have a pause at the start of every season change.

I'd like it to pause on "caravan will be leaving soon."  A couple times I've missed the Human caravan because they are sooo slow to get to the depot and unload that I get distracted by other things.  I come back to from making a sandwich or checking my email, only to see the wagons heading away from my depot.  Noooo!

I can do this.  There are 54 zoom events, and seasonal zooms and others would add a few more, so it'll be a large list, but more options are better provided they are hidden in a file and behind a menu key.  I think I can stick them in init.txt and then have an ESC option somewhat like key bindings to tweak these and other things.

I'd like a pause-and-zoom event for certain combat situations.  Some musk oxen had wandered into the fort and were killing dogs.  Seeing messages of them being "struck down" was bewildering to me.

Pausing on the initial injury inflicted would be best, although it might be difficult to distinguish between initial injury from a new group of aggressors and ongoing injuries from the same group.  Zooming to any dwarf/tame animal that dies (except when Slaughtered) would be good enough for now.

I'd like to either be able to pause on some inuries or have some sort of "instant replay."    I had a soldier suffocate to death in the hallway between my barracks and ballistae while I was micro-managing the magma forges and have no idea what happened.  In the absence of a dwarven CSI team, I'm left speculating about sparring injuries.

A pause analogous to "A lizardman has sprung from ambush!" would be useful, maybe "The sparring is getting rowdy!"

A pause for when certain buildings complete would be very nice.  Especially if it could be set from the build menu... That might be asking a bit much.

Ex. (B)uild - Toggle (pause on complete) - Brid(g)e - Select material.

Similar to selecting Dark/Light/Rock for mason shop items.

---

CSI teams... mmm... wouldn't mind if some noble had the job of keeping track of all dwarf deaths with a short history.  I assume some kind of record of this sort falls under the Combat History stuff?

Ooh, yeah, I'd like an autopause when too many dwarves idle for too long.  Sometimes I look away for a while and when I come back, half the fortress is goldbricking.

Also a key to jump to the "event"-location would be nice, maybe from the announce screen.

Most of the important events do that already. I imagine that you could have a key that brings you to the last event... But what about events that stack up but don't happen in the same place? Like "Interrupted by xxx [x44]". How the game could tell apart to which location jump without ruining the text consolidation?

I second these.

How about jumping to the monster that caused the last disturbance, or its last known location if it's stealthed?
