Always have blue arrows downwardsduring start
« on: April 16, 2010, 11:58:46 pm »

It seems everytime I add lots of points to certain skills during the start when preparing or adding loads of items with tsearch eventually my dwarves, kobolds or w/e seem to be very very nervous or depressed and only gets worse. With my dwarves in 3.1.03 1 gone beserk within 30min of gameplay and another left the camp entirely both were part of the 7 starting dwarves. Most of them were grey, blue, or red down arrows as well. I had beds and accomadtions for most of their skills. Would anything specificaly cause this to happen? Maybe certain skills arent good to raise during the start??

A blue downward arrow flashing across a dwarf means he's thirsty.

Which is wonderful but other things such as being drowzy or moody seems to happen more then it should especially since ive played 11 different area on dwarf fortress with the last 3 being the problems since theyre the ones I prepared for and raised certain skills such as flattery or persuader.

One of the issues with the 31.0x versions is that dwarves will now continue working even if they're hungry/thirsty/drowsy, and will only take a break once there is nothing else to do. so if you set a huge area to be mined out, your miner will keep working until he's exhausted/starving/dehydrated (i've even heard tell of dwarves working themselves to death). this in turn will make them very unhappy. hopefully this will be fixed soon, but try to manually give your dwarves breaks if they're working at a job and flashing one of those arrows

Would there be a fast way to do this without cancelling contruction lists or mining designations? Would going to "u" menu then "r" to cause selected unit to be inactive?

that would probably work, give it a shot on a hungry dwarf and see if he goes and eats.

red is unhappy. this will only go away once some things happen that give them happy thoughts (for example if they slept in a nice bedroom).

get them to stop their work and they should go drink.

I did stop I went in to make it so they wont have any jobs to do ever which sucks because youd have to go into managing them every few minutes to stop and then reapply the job but hey it didnt work even when i did that they either dug or went on break without drinking so I just lost 3 units. :\

well, not exactly no reason, if three of their friends just died they're going to be pretty unhappy.

you could try starting from scratch and making sure to give your dwarves some time off so as to prevent them from getting really unhappy in the first place. if you find it to be too much trouble, you could always just use version 40d, where they'll instantly stop what they're doing as soon as they become hungry/thirsty/tired.

No they died for no reason those mad were mad because they died? I've played version 3.1.02 many times with never having my units starve or die of thirst and if one or 2 did my units wouldnt all go beserk 2min after even with a graveyard outside and no body just laying about. Untill recently on 3.1.03 this has been happening in abudance. It must be a bug or a tsearch hack bug from raising many different skills all to 10.

it could be because of this, simply because by giving your dwarves a ton of skills (and thus labors) they always had something to do, and thus ended up depriving themselves of food/drink/sleep more often.

even if you give the dwarves a proper burial and everything, their death still upsets their friends. and in this case since your dwarves were already unhappy to begin with, the death was enough to push them into 'so unhappy that they go insane' territory.

I'm actually quite certain this was done on purpose so that your dwarves wouldn't instantly drop their hauling job/whatever to go get a drink or something. In fact, the changelog lists it as a feature.

The main issue is that it still causes unhappy thoughts.

the issue is that they won't stop to eat even after they finish their current job if there's still another job to do. for example if you put 'make rock mugs' on repeat your stonecrafter will not stop for food/sleep/drink, even after he finishes one set of mugs. he'll just move right on to the next. it's good that they wont interrupt current tasks the moment they become thirsty (which i'm fairly sure was the intent of the change), but not good that they'll work themselves to death when there are multiple tasks. toady is usually openly against the need for constant micromanagement so i very much doubt the 'work until manually stopped' effect is an intended behavior.
