Any point to Roads?
« on: April 16, 2010, 10:36:29 pm »

Not played since 2d and there to get big caravans you needed paved roads from map edge to trade depot. Unfortunately the caravans now refuse to drive allong my shiny yellow brick road and instead insist on driving over the mountain. Am I right in thinking that roads are now of no or extremely limited use?

Last I checked, the only effect of roads was to stop trees growing. So if you were playing in a jungle so thick and incorrigible that it threatened depot access, they could save your woodcutters work. After they made your masons do a lot more work.

They're thematic and add architectural value.

And they can add effect when visiting an old fort in adventure mode.

If you intended to get a non-bugged King in 40d, you needed... I think 8000* worth of roads built.

Roads are basically short term floors and long term smoothing. They eventually "wear out" and have to be rebuilt, but in the mean-time they act as floors and have lower material requirements than just building floors individually (much like bridges!).

Building destroyers can target them, I think.

Lies. Except for dirt roads, but then they're not floors at all.

Unless I'm mistaken, I've had my roads collapse over time and have to be rebuilt - but this was in the previous version.  There's no confirmation or denial of this on the wiki for 40d...

Heh, I walled off my map and made it so that only one way in had caravan access an older 3d version (not 40d, I can't remember which one) and it made the wagons spawn on my road, but the other caravan members appeared from the opposite side and had to follow all the way around the map to get to the road and go inside. They died on the way to a goblin ambush that was also bunched up along the edge of the map.

Well, in 40d, yes, roads are necessary for a King to show up. Otherwise, they're pretty much just for flare.

In 31.03, I'm not sure they're needed at all, since caravans don't drive wagons anymore (that I've seen). I haven't gotten to a point that I might need a King, but that requirement might still be in there.

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

I've been wondering about the human caravans. I haven't seen wagons yet but I assumed maybe they ramp it up later if I trade a lot with them, like I remember attracting merchant princes and such in forts in other versions.

As immibis said, that would only happen with dirt roads. They'd maybe last a few seasons then you'd have to clear any trees/bushes and order the dirt roads to be remade. Paved roads do not suffer any such degradation :) That's the way it worked in 23a, that's the way it worked in all 3D versions up to 40d, and as far as I'm aware that's the way it works in the new version as well.
