The outer wall has to be made from cast obsidian. There is no other option.

Actually I think constructed obsidian would technically be more appropriate.  The wall of Minas Tirith was made; it wasn't already there and they decided to build a city inside.

The key here is that while the outer wall was built by humanoids, it was built using techniques and/or magic that rendered it seamless, impervious to building destroying things, and black.  One description of Orthanc has "... built during the end of the Second Age by the men of Gondor out of four many sided columns of rock joined together by an unknown process and then hardened. No known weapon could harm it." 

The logical basic mapping for this in DF is indeed cast obsidian: seamless, impervious to building destroyers, and black.
