Questions from someone coming back to DF
« on: April 16, 2010, 12:27:23 pm »

Haven't played the new version yet:

1. Has mayday or someone else released an update tileset? If so, where?
Edit: So I just checked the mayday site and it appears he JUST releases an update. However:
2. Is the game playable? I see a lot of bug reports etc - are there any fatal bugs which make play difficult or impossible?

Hi!

I never use graphics, so I don't know about the first one.

The second one is tricky: There is the deadly rain bug which some people have reported and which is a game stopper. However, judging from the activity on the forums and my own experience of not encountering, it seems that it is relatively rare.

Other than that, the non-rotting insect vermin remains are somewhat annoying if you don't dump them regularly (especially since squirrel remains and the like DO rot with miasma).

The excessive blood and the resulting clean self frenzy is only a problem if you do a surface fortress. Underground fortresses can handle that provided you have a few idle dwarves.

Combat is a bit tricky, so you may want to start with invaders off and practice with animals, but successful application is possible.

Losing your expedition leader while not having a mayor makes it impossible to change your nobles - this is not a bug, though, as the expedition leader is the one who promotes them to their post until you get a mayor.

Those are the major problems.

Trading rates are very favorable, so trading for needed items is a good option.

All in all, at least without invaders, it is very easy to play and does not have any major bugs in my book.
