When he was first rescued, he tried to resume combat training even though his foot was broken and his head was torn. I removed him from the military, but his status is always "Soldier" and he never needs to eat, drink, or rest. Is there anything I can do or is he like this permanently?

Yes, this is the newest version, and he's in a hospital bed.

I've done that, I've tried switching hospitals, he just won't rest. The doctor won't see him either.

In that case, search the bug tracker. I'm pretty sure you've encountered a bug.

This might be the infamous "healed before doctor treated him" bug currently in the hospital system.
Try poking him with a upright spear trap, see if that resets the wound.

Pull all the unallocated beds out, re draft him and let him go spar and train.  Wound healing is odd in this version, but in any case about half my military is missing toes, fingers, and a few of them have yellow arms and legs.  I havent noticed any problems with them, other then the standard ones of not being very smart and wearing 2 shields, 2 weapons and no body armor.  Plus they seem to heal sooner or later on their own.  My militia commander had a yellow leg and now she is healthy.
