New channeling vs. old channeling - how do you feel?

The new channeling is covered in awesome sauce, the old channeling smelled real bad.

The old channeling was the best, we don't need two ways to make ramps it is just silly.

Old channeling was the best, new channeling is also the best.  Can't we all just get along?

i think what designation it is would not matter because player could/do change that.
Channeling is a channel d-h
Up ranp is up ramp d-r
Down Ramp is pretty useless but would be d-R maybe?
I hope toady addresses this.

Channelling is ideal now, since we no longer need to micromanage it. You don't want ramps? [d]-[z].
Alright, I've cleared all the ramps from my newly dug watering hole... now my dwarf is trapped and can't get back out.  How do you clear the ramps, and keep the dwarf accessible?
I'm just a noob but this is one big problem I noticed pretty quickly when I started playing.
How about ladders?  If dwarfs could carry ladders then they could climb out of the pit...  and this would be the realistic way that a dwarf would get out of a pit without digging...
Introduce ladders!  :D

Hi!

Alright, I've cleared all the ramps from my newly dug watering hole... now my dwarf is trapped and can't get back out.  How do you clear the ramps, and keep the dwarf accessible?

My current fortress is a bit slow/busy right now, so I can't check, but doesn't channelling, even in the new version, remove stairs from above? So, use one set of stairs along with your channelling as the means of where the dwarf gets out and the dispose of the stairs via channelling.

If I am wrong, then sorry.

Doesn't that leave the up-stair though? (I asked the question for everyone who wanted to ask that question before they wanted to ask the question)

Theoretically, it shouldn't. But I can't remember testing it.

Doesn't work that way I'm afraid.

Digging up stairs one floor down, then channeling out only removes the roof. It's how you can dig an impenetrable trench defense from underground without putting your dwarves at risk. This hasn't changed from the last version.

Digging channels over down stairs (Unconnected to up stairs) leaves a ramp.

Hi!

Yes, I can confirm that the up stairs remain. I was able to test it after all (my expedition leader whom I keep idle happened to be one of my miners). In addition, she decided to do the channelling from below (^_^;;

Oh well, at least we definitely know a way that does NOT work :) :)

Well, that's why we have mega-projects, since there's usually to little work! ;)

Don't be silly, that's not why we do megaprojects.

We do megaprojects because they are awesome!

The question still is; when do you do mega-projects? when you are just starting to dig out bedrooms? :P

Bedrooms?  Don't be silly.  Beds go in the hallway.  My miners are far too busy to carve bedrooms!

Edit: Its not like they need bedrooms for anything.  One legendary dining room and they'll be ecstatic for years!

When I start a fort I typically make room for and start construction of the mega project right away. At present, when I'm not going for magma, I do a great central spiral ramp that I start pretty much immediately, and build everything off (It looks awesome).

If I forget to bring a pick, the mega project is typically well underway long before I even begin building bedrooms, if only so I don;t get overrun by rampaging monsters.

Of course, this is a consequence of my building useful mega projects.

I don't build them because there's nothing else to do. They take planning and a great deal of forethought. If you want magma involved you need to have magma routes. Water, the same. You need to make sure you leave room for them where you want them, or they'll be unimpressive. After all, a great big statue of a dragon in the central dwarf made cavern of your massive fortress made entirely of gold you have stockpiled from the start is much more impressive than one off to one side made from whatever stone you could find.

Now that I've gotten a better handle on using it, the new channeling isn't an abomination, but I still would prefer to have the old one back, at least for soils that hold their shape well like rock and clay.

I could advocate keeping the current system for silt, sand and humus rich soils, as a stepping stone towards semi-fluid landscapes.

It's not an abomination, I don't think anyone was seriously arguing it was. It's just giving us less control than we used to have which is a shame in a game of this scale.

"semi-fluid" landscapes would be nice though.

I was.

This is basically me admitting that I was overreacting before.

I preferred the old channeling to the new, but I do feel that the new channeling should be renamed to "Dig Down ramp" or similar, since it does have it's uses, but it does not fit the concept we've gotten used to as being channeling.
