New channeling vs. old channeling - how do you feel?

The new channeling is covered in awesome sauce, the old channeling smelled real bad.

The old channeling was the best, we don't need two ways to make ramps it is just silly.

Old channeling was the best, new channeling is also the best.  Can't we all just get along?

Btw, I know a way in which the dig up ramp command is inferior to the new channelling, that's not just about switching Z levels. You can channel a wall and get down ramps, but you can only carve upward ramps under empty space. Tiny difference, I know, but a difference still.

This being wrong was one of the great utilities of the up ramp.  Great way to dig out a multi-level room, such as an underground cistern.

New way makes building strip mines a lot easier.

...Come to think of it.  That poll wasn't that well made with the third option not being clearly a "don't care" or "have both"

As it stands, somewhere between 51 and 114 don't care.... and 113 care to bring the old back and 50 care to stick with the new alone.

....  Or maybe I'm just in a strange mood and looking at it funny.

1 is 'I like the new one more'.
2 is 'I like the old one more'.
3 and 4 are 'I like both' and 'I don't care' respectively, basically the same.

BTW does anyone know a program that can change the tiles from ramps to floor?

There's none, Unless you put the new values one at a time into tweak. It's just one tile, don't worry, just floor or wall over it's tile.

You claiming it to be easily avoidable does not make it so.
I have yet to lose one miner to the introduction of a the ramp.
I've lost seven. You can have one of mine.

I'd... Rather not, I fear for the safety of my other two miners. :P

Just thought I'd give an update.  As of today, I've lost 15 miners to channeling since DF2010 was released, and most of these were not my fault.  (I admit I made a couple foolish designations, but that's what fetching the bloody pick off the miner's mutilated corpse is for.)

This is simply not true. Have you even tried to build upward ramps? They work exactly the same way.

What was the cause of death, anyway?

Try channelling into an aquifer on a freezing map. Your dwarf ends up at the bottom of the ramp and dies instantly.

He shouldn't need to submerge himself to dig a ramp. He should need to do that to dig out the square completely. In that case, however, it's either so cold that the walls of the pit flash-freeze instead of the dwarf, or it's not that cold, and the dwarf could get out albeit with cold, wet pants.
