More weapons
« on: August 04, 2007, 07:04:00 pm »

Can we please have more weapons?
*puppy eyes* We promise not to poke anyones eyes out...

Sling first comes in mind, since there is so many rocks out there.
And maybe rare exotic stuff?
There is a dagger skill, but it's not available for playable races.

Slings would not make sense unless you carve some [pellets] out of a single stone.

Stones, unless I'm mistaken, are quite big. Big enough to serve as rocks in balistas... I don't see how you could ever throw a rock like that with your bare hands, let alone with a sling...

There is stones on every step in adv. mode. I don't think they are all that big.
Especially since you can hold one in your every hand...

Well, more weapons using the hammer skill would be nice, there aren't much, only 3 and one of them is an improvisation (hitting with a crossbow).

Exotic weapons for some countries would be nyce, one nation would have kukri and katanas for example, while another nation would have scimitars and turbans...

Is there any difference between pike and spear (in real life) except for length?
Having different skills for them seems a bit too much.

The only difference I can think of is that a spear is a 'shortspear' while a pike is a huge pole with the pointy things at the end.

Actually, there are pretty large differences between the pike and the spear in real life.  Spears were more of an individual weapon, but pikes were useful only in large scale battles where they were used in formation.  Heard about the Swiss pike wall during the middle ages?  That said, I dont think that pikes are even necessary in DF (without formation fighting at least), plenty of other fun weapons are more worth including.

You want *more* weapons?

Maybe it's because I haven't been playing this game as long as some of you guys have, but my general impression is that this alpha suffer from too much of certain options, such as weapons for example.

Having new weapons would mean new profession and thus something else to micromanage. Right now I'm using a mixture of different soldier classes, but frankly I could use all swordsmen and I don't know how much it would make a difference. I know that some weapons have different damage characteristics than the others, but do these differences trully justify having all these options?

Sometimes I wonder if the game would benefit from having its profession system greatly simplyfied instead. For example, having one single soldier class (that can use all weapons), one single craftman class, etc. Sure it would be less options and maybe less realism (if that's even important), but the mid-end game would be easier to handle and more streamlined. Anyway...

simplify? hell no  :( the system is already a bit wooden.

more customization and control is exactly what we need.

Indeed, I've yet to try it. I'm sorry if what I wrote make no sense for those with more experience with the game.
