small but strong animals?
« on: April 15, 2010, 08:50:00 am »

so i want to make some animal thats just like normal sized but incredible strong to even take it on with lets say giants. i dont want to use the body_size for the strength as this also influences the amount of bones/meat it will produce.

tried with [PHYS_ATT_RANGE:STRENGTH:750000:800000:900000:1000000:1100000:1200000:1250000] and size 4000

but still a naked human will punch the crap out of a couple of them :/ seems this wont work on critters

I'm pretty sure attributes are capped at 5000. Try [PHYS_ATT_RANGE:STRENGTH:5000:5000:5000:5000:5000:5000:5000] rather than those numbers. They may have wrapped around and created weaklings. You could also try to play with the [ATTACK_CONTACT_PERC:100] and [ATTACK_PENETRATION_PERC:100] numbers in the attacks, or the relative sizes of the attacking body parts if appropriate.

Edit - though keep in mind that size does play an important role in combat, which may be hard to overshadow by higher attributes and damage. A too small creature may simply not be able to take on a human.

Well, first up, the physical attributes only go up to 5000, so they're probably wrapping back 'round to low values. You're on the right trail though.
Secondly, size 4000 is about 4 kg. A human is size 70 000.

Some things to try might be to make the animal out of very strong materials (steel skin or bones, for instance), give them a few tags like [NOBLEED] [NOSTUN] and the like, and to increase the [ATTACK_CONTACT_PERC:x] or [ATTACK_PENETRATION_PERC:x] to beyond 100. Some feller said that that had worked for him, although I haven't tried it yet. Oh, and increasing the speed usually has a pretty drastic effect on danger.

Yes. Remember that, aside from the attributes cap, you can play around with materials. Make your critters' skins of adamantine and see how just about anything bounces off of them.

Aside from extreme cheese thought, there's several opportunities the new materials and body system is giving to make creatures lethal, other than being big and strong.

i am not really into the body material stuff now, just did plain copypasta critters now with a few different traits (like groundhogs as normal hares and squirrels into bunnies as vermin)

what would i need to set the skin/teeth to adamantine?

Just a heads up:  I think you can just say [PHYS_ATT_RANGE:STRENGTH:5000] if you want to fix it at one value.  Doing the latter will result in weird descriptions, since your creature will be representative of the weakest, strongest, and averagest of its race.  I did this to make my invariant test dwarves.

Keep in mind that you could also give it more "strength" with additions to it's bite. Ex: a Bunny that does one hit kil... Someone must make that bunny. with speed:0.

speed 0 would be odd, but one hit kill is more or less what i intended to do :x

It's not the size so much as the material. You need to make them out of something that can take that much punishment. Perhaps decrease the skin elasticity (let less damage through) and increase its material strength (so it tears less easily). If necessary, do the same for muscles and bones. Note that since bones are the innermost material, their elasticity doesn't matter too much. I noticed in the elephant fight, the bunny's teeth were injured. You probably need to make their bones a lot stronger. An elephant is MUCH weaker than a BC.
