Digging speed: Changeable?
« on: April 15, 2010, 01:54:56 am »

This is my single most wanted mod of ALL TIME.

IMO, you can't properly run a non-dwarven fortress without being forced to mine slower...and a change in digging speed also makes caverns and the overworld more important to use.

It changes the nature of the game pretty drastically, makes stone more valuable...and if you want a huge amount of stone from stripmining a place, you'll actually want to try mass-producing pickaxes and draft like twenty guys if you want to get anywhere.

Sure, it's not for everyone, which is why I want it in a mod!  I'm probably looking for something like 1/4 to 1/8 digging speed, or depending on how it's handled, 4x to 8x digging delay.  I'm guessing that this probably requires memory hacking like nanofortress does (if I'm lucky), or some sort of tsr (if I'm not).

(I'm undecided whether miners ought to gain speed at the old xp/time, or at the old xp/tile, but I probably won't get any say in the matter!)

Someone help?  Preferably someone with memory hacking experience--Where will I need to aim to hit this target?

Actually I might as well ask--does the density of stone alter the speed at which it's dug?  Soil is faster to dig than stone, but is that a property of density, or is it a property of "soil is magic"?

Because if it's a density thing, that makes my life a lot easier.

Looking at the new metal stats then I'd have said it should be both rock density and the impact strength.

No idea if it is though.

So I haven't played in quite a few months, just haven't felt very inspired, and suddenly I thought "I bet I could really get into it again if I could drop the mining speed", did a search and uh...  turns out I already made this topic only a few months back, then forgot about it.

Any news on this front?  Anybody?  Okay, this probably should have gone into the Modding forum to start with, but still.

...Come on, isn't it dwarfier to actually need twenty miners for a major excavation project, instead of like...two?

Only way to do it without making everything hard as steel is to drop the speed at which dwarfs do everything. However, in the most recent versions, mining through stone is much slower than in previous versions, by virtue of how the material hardness is taken into account. Digging through soil and sand is still fast though.

Excellent!  I can work with this.  Are you saying that the material value of the stone itself is taken into account?  Or is it just the pickaxes?

Because if it's the stone (regardless of what the pickaxes are like), I can just make stone harder without much other game effect...

Slower in newer versions, what foolery is this? Since 40d, I've seen mining speed INCREASE, if anything. My legendary miners go through rock at running speed and above if I train them enough.

Mining is fast enough, they go through granite like its made of butter to begin with, also the slow mining is likely due to lag more than set speeds.

Are you sure mining speed now respects material properties?  I noticed a decrease in the speed of my legendary miners but I think that is because they no longer get absurd agility stat increases from mining skill.

So uh, anything new here?  Is it possible yet with hack tools or otherwise?

Bar changing a dwarf's natural mining skill, or maybe speed (I'm not too sure.), I don't know if there's another way to speed up mining.

Only way I know that will probably help you is changing the learn-rate of the dwarven mining skill. Its not perfect, but depending on the final ratio you could have dwarves have to mine the whole map to lvl the skill to legendary, kinda.

To do this, go to your creature_standart raw file and under DWARF (should be the first), add this line:

[SKILL_LEARN_RATE:MINING:x] (were x is the % of the default mining rate you want)

It should be preferably around the    [PHYS_ATT_RANGE lines.
