How do I send keystrokes to dwarf fortress?

Like, I like quickfort, but it's really tough for me to work it T.T I decided I would rather just learn the skills to make a fort creator that actually does all the work for you, with a nice colorful GUI to boot :P.
So how do I send keystrokes to Dwarf Fortress?

I think Auto Hot Key might be what you're looking for, it's a pretty powerful scripting language that can send keystrokes to a specified window, as well as read pixel colours, search for and compare bitmaps, all kinds of stuff...

Really, why not just build it with the tools on the game? It can't really be that hard.

In all seriousness, for the windows version you would send the DF window keystroke window messages.
