So much love for the longsword right now. Literally just unlocked the plains and it's mix of reach, mobility and power are perfect for bringing down the big shell-faced things (totally didn't forget their names half way through writing this post)

I have to agree! It's a pity it's got such a negative reputation online.

On weapons I feel like I'm starting to get the swing of most of them, I'm starting to like greatswords more (that level 3 charge will usually either stun or knock something down which is always a great feeling), switch axes are pretty cool now that I've discovered the phial discharge.

Will I ever settle on a single weapon to "main", probably not.

Well to be fair the reason the longsword has a negative reputation online is because of two things.

Iunno about the previous games, but now at least there are some narrow ranged attacks, the normal X and the A followup. But yeah I'd heard the spirit combo gauge never ran out in the original MH3 so you either had to be spamming spirit combos or get tripped constantly.

Man, you haven't lived if you've never been immobilized for like 4-5 seconds while a long sword dude spirit combos you. And you're pressed up against the monster the whole time, so you don't even get the luxury of an upswing's knockback.

3/5 Plesioth fins so far. Farming these guys isn't hard, just... I feel like they should be Barioth size, not Rathian size. They don't really do anything to earn Rathian size, and it just makes them harder to hit.

This. The LS user absolutely cannot use his spirit combo when the monster is paralyzed/KO'd because it wastes the paralysis to a ridiculous degree. It was easier in MH3 because you could just do two spirit combos and sit a decent yellow attack buff, which never ran out.

Yeah it always seemed odd to me that the only times you'd be able to use a spirit combo is when you're ruining everything else for the other players. I guess a duo of longsword user and bow/bowgun user might work pretty well.

Honestly, I think long sword stuff is pretty manageable.

I mean, if you knock over something as big as a Rathian then you should just spend a second getting a good position. You should be able to slash the back/body/whatever freely while they hit other stuff. You might never be included in the precision "hit its face while it's down" sort of stuff, but you make up for that with vertical strikes at tails.

LS dudes just have to choose their combos carefully. You can't just go "oh knockback combo time" - sometimes you might have to waste a second of your own time walking to save significantly more of your allies' time.

Huh, that's a good point, just keep away from the rest of the group.

On a mildly unrelated note, has anyone else gotten the steel armor? Is it not in MH3U? I've gotten all the materials that's used in it and It hasn't shown up in the forge, so I'm not sure if they removed it or what.

Actually, I think it'd be best if LS users decided to choose GS as their secondary weapon, because the same type of prediction necessary to get off lvl 3 charges is the same type of prediction that the LS user can readily use when doing the spirit combo, since it is only necessary that the last strike hits a monster. On top of this, if I'm not mistaken, you also get a slight invulnerability period during the last swing. I'm not sure, though, but one time while fighting the Barroth, I was almost certain that one attack would hit me during the last spirit combo swing, but it didn't.

Yeah there's a pinch of invulnerability on the last swing, I think it's when you're moving forward specifically.

So I finally got enough time to sit down and play for a few hours. After finally being able to access dual swords again I AM SO MUCH BETTER THAN BACK IN TRI.

Sand Barioth Gunner armor is complete. Evade Extender is pretty much the best ability in the game, and Attack Up (M) is just icing.

Also I found a +10 expert amulet to use on all my sets now instead of my old +10 ice res deal. I mean, I'll still use the old one situationally, but this is basically free damage. I am very happy with it.

I actually managed to find a slotted amulet which is nice. Also got a gathering +10 amulet which isn't bad but at the same time I'll usually be using leather armor anyway when gathering sooooo.

The best weapon throne has always been occupied by the hammer, since MH1 on the PS2. Also, it's an amazing weapon to use in groups.

COUGH COUGH LANCE BECAUSE OF UNDERWATER.

Seriously! That solid defense just trumps everything else underwater.

Although, I freely admit that hammer is fantastic for most everything else. It's like a GS, but with more mobility, more utility, and LESS SHEATHING! If you're looking for a weapon to main, hammer is certainly among the best choices available.
