Monster Hunter Tri is out for wii (not WiiU) and Monster Hunter Portable 3rd is on PSP.  Pretty sure we have emulators for them.  What are the differences between the games, and are they worth playing?

No, the most SUPERIOR Monster Hunter Game out right now is Monster Hunter Frontier. It's the only one that get's continuous updates. It's the only one that truly makes any sense. I think they even added water fighting and they DID add the alternate combat styles found in the Wii.

There is no reason for them to even make this game to be honest.

True words spoken. I won't buy a 3DS just for MH3U because I have played Tri on my Wii which is now collecting dust. Capcom is just a bunch of ... .

For some reason, I'm not getting any flintstones... I make sure to break both the flints whenever fighting a qurupeco, but still nothing.

You might have to fight the qurupeco in a quest to get the flintstones. I know the king's frill from Great Jaggi works in a similar manner, at least.

On another note, I've finally managed to be straight up taken out in a quest three times by my first monster, Gigginox!

I am terrible with poison. And DoT's in general really, that's probably why I had such an issue with qurupeco.

Actually, Gigginox was my first real hurdle as well. Barroth was tough, as was the Lagiacrus, but for most of the monsters, I handled them pretty well. But GIGGINOX. SHOWING UP IN EVERY SINGLE TUNDRA MISSION. What a PAIN. I hated him. Then I stopped using a Greatsword and swapped to the Rathalos SnS. No longer a problem.

Also, Peco flints aren't that rare at all in Ultimate. I've gotten maybe 4-6 from murdering the Peco around 5 times or so. I decided to start using Hunting Horns and Bows, so I usually get the breaks on the flints as well as the head.

I've hunted about 7 or 8 Agnaktors now. 56% drop rate on beaks when you break the head, which I always do. I've found one. I need two.

I've found four Wyvern Stones from these guys. Those have a 3% drop rate. This is not fair.

Anyone here can say how effective exhaust ammo/coatings are? Is it better to fire them all at once or few at a time?

It's pretty good to use at the start or use it after it just ate.

Wiki says lagiacrus have at least 15 fire weakness on every part. If understood what I read online, that means weapon with equal normal and fire damage would cause at least as much fire damage as normal damage?

Yeah, found out the lance's backstep is great for dealing with gigginox. Also most of his attacks can be blocked! Still a rumble to be sure but getting there.

Nope! You'll pretty much never be doing as much elemental damage. The basic rule I was told is that you should divide your weapon's elemental damage by ten when considering damage output, because that's how much you'll be dealing on average.

I'm pretty sure the monster's elemental weakness is the portion of your elemental damage that it takes. Meaning the Lagiacrus will take 15% of that number, so if you have a sword that does 120 Fire then you'll deal 18 fire damage to it per hit.

From what I've read in other places, that is exactly the case yeah. Physical damage is way more heavily weighted then elemental. On the bright side nothing ever absorbs damage!

Lagiacrus seems to be a lot easier if you start by pumping him full of exhaust arrows: He won't have enough energy to spam his charges when he gets angry.

That's not how exhaust works.

Status effects work through hidden numbers. Every monster has a limit on the amount of status they can take. For the Lagiacrus, its limit is 180. When you apply the exhaust coating to your arrows, it increases that hidden status effect counter until it reaches 180, at which point, the Lagiacrus becomes exhausted. Signs of exhaustion are drooling, darkened eyes (Underwater monsters have glowy eyes that help you see them). Lagiacrus in particular almost immediately heads for land when it's exhausted. In any case, the exhaust status effect does nothing until Lagiacrus' limit of 180 is reached. IIRC, monsters can be pulled out of rage with the exhaust status effect, but they can't be exhausted and enraged at the same time.

Yeah, I know, it's not really intuitive.

EDIT: Now that I look back at the damage formulas for Tri, it's saying that when the exhaust tolerance limit is reached, they lose a large chunk of stamina. Well, I could be wrong, but I'm around 75-80% sure this is how it works because when I use a hammer, the monsters usually come out of enraged mode far faster than they normally do.

I believe exhaust works slightly differently than the other status effects since it affects their stamina rather than just hitting them with paralysis/poison.

Also the Lagiacrus' energy is different than stamina. I'm pretty sure it uses stamina to charge its back shocker things, but then it's basically got a few moves' worth of shock that are independent of regular exhaustion.

Hm.

But the second part is most definitely true, even if my memory keeps telling me that he has electricity up until he uses his massive sparks. Although, something to note: his ability to charge is greatly diminished if you break his back spines.

In other news, the lance (and maybe the gunlance too) remains the most useful underwater weapon, in my opinion. With evasion's utility reduced so heavily, a solid defense is extremely acceptable underwater. Although, since I've been playing Ultimate, I'm not sure if I'm correct in noting that the number of invincibility frames on underwater dodging has increased. Anyone else get this feeling?

...Bows don't seem to have enough firepower for soloing multiplayer quests? Even if I'm attacking constantly, I keep running out of time.
