Most people tend to just spam A because it's easier than the gymnastics your hand has to carry out in order to do a decent combo if you're using the Wiimote.

...People actually use the Wiimote to play? I figure everyone who plays makes use of the classic controller they released specifically because of Monster Hunter.

Hrm. If I'm doing my math properly, at purple sharpness, hitting the legs of Ala, using a rather conservative type modifier of 10% and assuming that all hits are with a blade, Alatreon Star should be hitting for 9 damage per hit.
In a similar situation, utilizing a type modifier of 110%, hitting with the sweet spot and accounting for affinity, Anguish (G) hits for 87.  (9.6x.)

All things identical, hitting Rathalos in the head, Alatreon Star should be doing about 37 with Anguish (G) doing 265. (7.2x)

SnS damage should be understated by approximately 1 for Ala and 3 for Rathalos, but I don't recall which combo is being brought up at the moment so I can't get the exact rates per hit. Similarly, Anguish (G) might be off slightly since I never used it and might be basing it off the wrong attack.

(The +1/+3 values change the ratio to 8.7 and 6.6.)

Edit: Oh thanks, Knirisk, just render my post completely useless.  :P

I did. And I did quite well with it.

I use the classic controller. :P Anyway, it's fairly easy to get a combo off even with out a revolving slice. I think it's some like just hold up and tap A a bunch of times. The revolving slice is like + or -, so it's not even completely comfortable to do on the classic controller.

Anyway, the SnS has other failings, such as underwater combat. Which sucks, completely, because the almost-never-get-hurt portion of the SnS gets taken away. :-\

Sorry. :P I'd been working on these calculations for some time.

There's also the fact that the SnS combo is vastly reduced underwater. It goes down to a maximum of three attacks or something.

I use the Wiimote, actually.
Got into the habit of it when playing arena with my friend since we only had one classic controller, and now I can't use the classic controller at all for it.
Besides, with a hammer it doesn't matter too much and it's actually a bit more comfortable.

Let me just say, every weapon besides lance is garbage underwater anyway.

That is so incredibly untrue it actually causes me physical pain.

Just because Lance is good underwater doesn't mean it's the only thing that doesn't suck. Literally every weapon except SnS and switch axe are fine underwater.

I seem to recall bowgunning underwater worked out fine. =P

Well, I guess that's just how it feels to me. The difficulty of getting close to a monster underwater before it decides to swim off somewhere and make you have to reposition is like an endless chase. Alright, my bad then, I guess I just really suck underwater and it's a personal problem.

I always forget about bowgun for some reason. The range does get cut though.

I use the revolving slice. I also use the right-stick attacking controls like a proper MH player though. :P I also specialize in SnS, though.

Strolling casually out of the way of attacks and bringing stuff down without taking any damage is the most fun.

I agree on them being much more terrible underwater though. I should know, I killed about 25 offline Lagi with them...

... the + slash can be used as part of the combo? I didn't know that. I thought it reset the animation if you switched between it and A.

Most likely I'll be available to play Monday through Thursday starting between 12pm-1pm PST and for at least a few hours.
