Dear god the Lagiacrus

It killed me in two hits, then followed me when I tried to complete the quest in another area and did it again

You're not meant to fight it. What I did was kill and carve the first Epioth that you come across. I went to the area with Lagiacrus and retreated immediately. Two more Epioths spawned. Luckily, each one gave me some guts.

It's much less damaging when you're supposed to fight it.

I didn't try to fight it. I thought it was slower, so I tried to run around and kill/carve some nearby epioths. It hit me with its shockwave shot thing. Then in the other area I didn't expect it to follow me so I wasn't anywhere near close enough to the shore to get away.

And then I lost to a great jaggi. That was a combination of being unprepared and being terrible at using a greatsword. I switched off to hammers for now. I've got a bone one.

Hah, fond memories of learning to play in MH1. The learning curve definitely seemed much steeper there... You'd fight some Velociprey, then the Velocidrome which was easier than the Great Jaggi, and then you got to Yian Kutku and it was like slamming into a brick wall until you learned how to not suck by sheer brute force of will. Nothing like having your rear handed to you multiple times by a giant pink chicken...

If I recall the first time I fought Rathian was a similar abrupt "shit just got real" moment.

I guess I'm not a good judge of the learning curve in MH3 because I was already good at the game when I started, but still. I swear you kids these days got it easy.

He walls a lot of new players.

In solo play, Gigginox was more of my wall. Seriously, you're just mindlessly wanderin' around in the tundra doing stuff and then suddenly there's this fucking big bug thing that's eating you alive. I can't count the number of times that bastard showed up during my Great Baggi quests and he would always screw me over. When his quest came, I died so many times. I finally killed him with less than three minutes left on the clock. Never again would he trouble me.

The walls for me in my time playing Monster Hunter was the Khezu back in Freedom Unite, and the Barroth.

I was playing with my HR63 friend (now 64).

We were hunting a qurupeco and it called over a rathian. I say "oh fuck, we've got to get out of here" and he replies "No, man. We're going to get you some good stuff."

Later we beat the barroth so now I can get to HR10. I enjoy being carried. I'm probably not getting better as fast as I would if I was solo, but damn, I've still got to get good at dodging when the rathian can easily take half my health away, then take the other half before I can stand back up.

Learn to be a team player.  SnS and hammer and big swords, you've got to figure out where you fit in the team and what type of damage you deal.  Do you power through with a flame element greatsword, or tackle monsters with a paralysis hammer, or do you provide direct strikes with SnS and try to break parts off?

Well, I wouldn't say status hammer would be the best choice unless other people in your team are also going with paralysis weapons, since you get in relatively few individual strikes. SnS on the other hand is fantastic for inflicting ailments or dealing elemental damage.

I'm probably not getting better as fast as I would if I was solo, but damn, I've still got to get good at dodging when the rathian can easily take half my health away, then take the other half before I can stand back up.

Take some time to watch the monsters and learn their patterns and the way they attack. Once you know where is safe and where isn't to stand, it's easier to dodge safely out of harms way. Also/Or, invest in some armor that gives Evasion skill.

Well, I'm actually pretty confident I'm getting better. I soloed the great Jaggi. It was ridiculously easy.

Now I just have to capture one, which is just sort of annoying. Time to make a couple spare traps just in case he decides he doesn't want to cooperate.

Heh. Wait until you're doing far more advanced stuff, then revisit some of the early hunts. It's kind of a 'Did I actually have problems with this?' moment... shortly followed by 'Darn it, I'm having trouble capturing this thing because it dies too quickly.'

I wanted to see if I could take out a qurupeco by myself, but the server doesn't seem to be working right now. Stuck on 10%. Maybe it's just my internet being finicky.

MH2 was a MASSIVE upgrade from MH1. MH1 is a fucking JOKE in comparison. The same world and everything as 1 expect massively expanded, twice the number of weapon types, so many new features, new mobs, new maps, new resources, new skills/tactics/attacks, and so forth.

I have all the Monster Hunters that came out for the PSP. :3

So unhappy this only comes out for the Wii, the only system I never owned, borrowed, or will ever possess.

Bah... How long is the Jhen Mohran event going to go for? I won't have time to play with the rest of you probably until at least this weekend and even then not till later in the day.
